Job Description

Job Summary/Objective

Albemarle Corporation, a global leader in advanced materials for mobility, energy, connectivity and health, is seeking a scientist with industrial experience in all aspects of flame retardancy, especially in brominated flame retardants. Experience in customer-facing technical service, new product development, application development, regulatory support, and external advocacy for fire safety solutions is needed to be successful in this role. This role will support Research and Technology (R&T) workstreams in all stages of research and development, as well as commercial product support. The role involves interfacing with internal stakeholders across a variety of functions both technical and non-technical as well as external stakeholders including customers, consultants, and regulatory bodies. Excellent communication skills are important for the role. This position reports to the R&T Director located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but will be a remote position.

Essential Functions

  • Function as a subject matter expert in brominated flame retardants
  • Provide analysis and insight into academic literature and regulatory publications to help guide strategy
  • Work with industry experts, internal and external, to help Albemarle ensure it is gathering the most relevant and highest quality information about flame retardants
  • Advise colleagues on experimental directions to provide breakthroughs in new product development and existing product application expansion
  • Prepare documentation about flame retardant performance for both internal and external use
  • Assist in responses to customer inquiries, including troubleshooting if necessary
  • Develop a strong technical knowledge of Albemarle’s fire safety products and be an advocate for flame retardants in the marketplace

Required Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related technical discipline
  • At least 15 years of relevant industrial experience and expertise in flame retardants
  • Knowledge of typical flame retardant applications including those used in appliances & electronics, building & construction, telecommunication, automative, and other markets
  • Strong critical thinking skills and ability to translate complex data and ideas into actionable insights, plus excellent verbal and written communication skills to share those insights
  • Ability to prioritize and respond on time to multiple parallel requests while working both independently and in collaboration with colleagues at a variety of locations

Preferred Qualifications

  • 20+ years of industry experience, including 10+ years of expertise in brominated flame retardants as demonstrated by a history of publications, presentations, and/or patents
  • 10+ years of expertise in advocacy and regulatory technical support of brominated flame retardants as demonstrated by a history of publications and presentations while working in an industrial environment.
  • Deep technical understanding of Analytical Chemistry strategies, concepts, and techniques that can be applied to develop fundamental understanding related to advocacy and regulatory technical support of brominated flame retardants.
