Job description

The Principal Engineer role embodies the responsibility of a “spirit guide” for the advancement of a specific technology practice or discipline (examples: DevSecOps, Machine Learning/AI, Web/mobile, etc.). This role ensures that utilization of that technology in the organization is applied with a consistent understanding of the pragmatic balance of “Perfect” vs. “Good enough”, weighing the constraints of available skills, resource availability, cost, and time-to-market commitments. A Principal Engineer is actively/directly involved in developing foundational assets with that technology on emerging business needs but with a primary objective of educating others to evolve further and ensure support continuity. This role will also be called upon to inform/educate non-technical stakeholders on that technology domain and is expected to be involved and aware of industry updates and latest developments to guide company or partner implementations strategically.

Success in this role is measured by the following:

  • Familiarity with specific technology and relevance/benefit to Progyny increases (AMB survey feedback)

  • Technology implementation provides measurable value benefits (COGS/TCO reduction, customer satisfaction/sales wins, etc.)

  • Technology implementation guidelines and active curation of impacted assets meets or exceeds relevant Service-level Agreements (SLA)

  • Is regarded by peers as a domain expert and effective collaborator and is regularly sought out for their expertise and support

What you’ll do…

  • Provide technical thought leadership of new or evolution to existing platform within a specific technology discipline through ideation, design, and initial implementation

  • Documents and defines technology implementation/practice guidelines

  • Coordination of implementation plans with program/project management to meet delivery timelines

  • Mentor internal and external implementation stakeholders on ‘best fit’ and ‘appropriate use’ of technology to meet business objectives

  • Maintain awareness of relevant industry and vendor roadmaps updates and knowledge-sharing events to maintain currency for organization

  • Monitors the ongoing implementation and utilization of specific technologies for ‘drift’ and realignment to shared best practices/implementation guidelines

  • Leads evaluation of solutions with balanced understanding of non-functional quality goals (ISO 25010 / Q42) against cost/implementation constraints

  • Leads learning sessions (lunch and learn, conference debriefs, tech talks, etc.) with both technical stakeholders and broader corporate community as relevant

  • Supports technical roadmap development in conjunction with engineering leadership

  • Participates in relevant industry conference/working groups to act as bidirectional ‘ambassador’ on shaping effective technical roadmap

About you…

  • Proven experience working as expert-level hands-on technology advocate

  • Large-scale / complex implementation experience with target technology

  • Work experience with moderate-to-large distributed engineering teams

  • 10+ years working in software engineering discipline

In compliance with New York City's Wage Transparency Law, the annual salary [wage] range for NYC-based applicants is: $170,000 - $180,000. There are a variety of factors that go into determining a salary range, including but not limited to external market benchmark data, geographic location, and years of experience sought/required. Progyny offers a total compensation package comprised of base salary, cash bonus, and equity.
