Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Underwriting Supervisor manages the Underwriting production staff. This role is responsible for planning, organizing and managing the day-to-day functions of assigned underwriters and underwriting assistants.  Additionally, this role is responsible for establishing policies and standards for work assigned to the Underwriting department, responsible for productivity and quality for assigned staff and providing guidance and support for staff development Lastly, this role will make recommendations for underwriting and operational improvements.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Hire, train, counsel, and coaching of assigned personnel.
  • Responsible for performance reviews, salary reviews and recommendations, job evaluation and authority appropriation.
  • Works jointly with each staff member to develop specific, measurable performance goals based on the department’s operating plan and the organization’s goals.
  • Ensure awareness and consistent adherence to The FAIR Plan’s Underwriting philosophy for assigned staff.
  • Review claims referrals for coverage issues and substandard conditions.
  • Conduct audits for assigned Underwriting units to assure adherence to established processes, standards, compliance requirements and philosophy.
  • Research and prepare responses for assigned CDI complaints.
  • Review workflows and recommends changes to maximize efficiencies.
  • Serve as an intermediary between the policyholder/producer and the inspection vendor when disputes arise.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions are in compliance with the Association’s Plan of Operations and Underwriting rules.
  • Maintain employee work activity/productivity records and provides regular feedback to employees on their performance.
  • Provides support as needed for underwriting projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Underwriting and Product
  • Plan, organize, distribute, monitors and control the general workflow of personnel
  • Participate in staffing analysis and maintain agreed upon staffing levels.
  • Develop, review and adjust annual plan on a quarterly basis.
  • Work with the Underwriting leadership team and Operations in workflow reviews and efficiency improvements.
  • Provides support to the Underwriting staff on issues exceeding their authority/expertise.
  • Collaborate with management on interdepartmental issues to assure operational efficiency.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

The individual must meet the following requirements:

  • College degree or 5+ years work experience with an insurance company.
  • 3 years’ experience in Underwriting or relevant work experience
  • Prior experience managing personnel is preferable
  • Cross functional insurance experience is preferable
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
