Job description

Organizational Setting

The position of Gender Specialist is aligned with FAO's strategic priorities. The consultancy is part of the regional Emergency and Resilience Program for Latin America and the Caribbean, in collaboration with the joint FAO-COSUDE program "Strengthening Resilience to Forest Fire Risk (FiRe)," implemented in four Andean countries. This role contributes to FAO's Strategic Programme on Resilient Agri-Food Systems (BL4).

The Gender Specialist will focus on ensuring the integration of gender-sensitive approaches into the FiRe program. This includes developing tools, strategies, and communication products to mainstream gender considerations, providing capacity building and technical advice to regional teams, and ensuring gender equity in all project activities and outcomes.

The project is framed within the Emergency and Resilience Program of FAO's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, which aims to strengthen countries' capacities in prevention, preparedness, and response, as well as in the design and implementation of anticipatory actions to address disasters and crises affecting food security and agricultural livelihoods. Additionally, the Gender Specialist will provide technical assistance to other resilience initiatives within the program, contributing to FAO's Emergency and Resilience Program in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Reporting Lines

The Gender Specialist will work under the overall coordination of the Emergency and Rehabilitation Officer of FAO RLC and in collaboration with the project coordinator and task force, as well forestry specialists, and country-level project coordinators.

Technical Focus

Integrated gender-sensitive approaches into emergency and resilience projects, developing tools, strategies, and knowledge products to ensure gender equity, and providing capacity building and technical advice to regional teams.

Tasks And Responsibilities

  • Gender Mainstreaming: Ensure the integration of gender perspectives in integral fire management project. Guarantee that activities, strategies, and outcomes promote gender equality and social inclusion.
  • Analysis and Monitoring: Conduct gender analyses, collect and analyze sex-, ethnicity-, and age-disaggregated data, and monitor indicators for gender equality progress.
  • Capacity Building: Develop tools and facilitate training sessions to enhance rural women's participation and leadership in decision-making processes.
  • Technical Advice: Provide technical guidance to interdisciplinary teams and partners to implement gender-sensitive actions.
  • Knowledge Management: Coordinate data collection, promote gender-sensitive strategies, and support the development of proposals and partnerships that include gender and social inclusion aspects.
  • Communication Strategy: Design gender-sensitive guidelines for integrated fire management communication strategies at national and regional levels.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in gender studies, social sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in gender-sensitive approaches in emergency and resilience projects.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish.
