Job Purpose:

Salary: £32,427 Full time Equivalent + benefits 

Location: Remote working with a requirement to attend face-to-face events to connect with volunteers and conduct surveys. 

Contract: Permanent, part time. 

Hours: 14.5 hours per week, preferably accross 2 days a week. Occasional weekend working may be required in order to support volunteering, and other, events. **The regualrity and flexibility of travel will be discussed further at interview stage **

The Insigths and Economics Team seats within the Strategy and Impact Directorate. The team produces innovative research about the value of the multi-dimensional benefits that waterways deliver to the economy, society, and the environment.  This work is informed by different data sources, including the surveys in which the Survey Data Analyst will be working to deliver. The team also detects patterns in how different audiences engage with waterways and with the Trust to help shape the strategy of the organisation. The team is composed by the Insights and Economics Manager, the Insights Specialist, the Economist, and the Data engineer.

The Survey Data Analyst is central to informing the strategic choices, evaluating the success’ and proving the value of the work the Trust undertakes. We support decision makers to make informed choices with robust and thoughtful evidence, through managing research programs, collating and analysing data and applying the latest economic techniques to communicate our value to funders, partners and government. General duties include; 

• Ensuring successful primary data collection (through the recruitment and management of volunteer survey teams operating across our six regions) for face-to-face surveys on our towpaths, museums and destination sites
• Supporting on data collection for the participatory programmes conducted in multiple locations across our network
• Survey & questionnaire design, analysis of primary data, reporting of survey results and significant collaboration with colleagues across different functions in the Trust

The Data Analyst (Survey Coordinator and Research Analyst) is responsible for ensuring succesful coordination of a tasforce of volunteers, primary data collection and analysis.

The role will involve the management, training and supervision of a volunteer taskforce.  The job holder will also provide support to the Insights Specialist and the Insights and Economics Manager through the process of delivering surveys and analysing and reporting their results. This will include working on survey & questionnaire design, fieldwork, and quantitative and qualitative analysis of data to communicate key results to stakeholders within the Trust.

Key accountabilities: 

• Ensure that the collection of quantitative and qualitative data is carried out as robustly and accurately as possible.
• Lead and advise on the selection, induction, training and management of volunteers directly engaged by the Trust.
• Ensure that the volunteers are trained in quantitative and qualitative methodologies to undertake surveys and collect data.
• Work with the regional and national teams to develop and implement a planned programme of volunteer research activities with regards to survey data collection.
• Promotion of a strong safety culture to ensure all projects are completed with safety as a priority thereby ensuring the wellbeing of volunteers.
• Engaging with and empowering volunteers so that they feel part of and fully represent the Trust.
• Collaborate in survey and questionnaire design using online survey tools.
• Analyse data gathered using software (e.g. MS Excel) to an advanced level and produce research reports / presentations to present findings.
• Displaying the Trust values and behaviours at all times.

About you

Qualifications & attainments: 

• Undergraduate degree, preferably with a research-based component (e.g. Sociology, Anthropology, other social sciences).

Technical experience: 

• Previous experience of managing delivery of quantitative / qualitative data and research activities (e.g. surveys, focus groups, depth interviews).
• Experience in survey design, including the use of survey software (e.g. SNAP, Survey Monkey, Qualtrics).
• Knowledge of applying data analysis techniques.Previous experience of managing heritage or attraction-based surveys in a heritage or participatory context is desirable.
• Demonstrable ability to motivate and develop individuals and teams of volunteers, particularly to deliver citizen science or research-based projects.

General skills: 

• Proven people and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to communicate complex ideas to non-expert audiences.
• Knowledge of applying data analysis techniques.
• Collaborative with team members to successfully achieve common goals.
• Good time management and multi-tasking skills with ability to remain calm and work to deadlines to provide timely analysis.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
• Ability to understand and implement organisational policies.
