ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT
The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector of the Union. BDT deals mainly with development policies, strategies, programming, projects, as well as technical cooperation activities to enable and foster universal access to affordable, high-quality and secure telecommunications/ICTs and Foster equitable and inclusive use of telecommunications/ICTs to empower people and societies for sustainable development. To effectively and efficiently serve the needs of Member States, BDT is organized into four functional areas:
- Operations Coordination Department (Office of the Deputy to the Director) (DDR)
- Projects, Partnerships & Digital Skills Department (PPS)
- Digital Networks & Environment Department (DNE)
- Digital Knowledge Society Department (DKS)
The regional offices provide assistance to the ITU Member States of the Region, ensuring a close relationship and collaboration. To implement the agreed programs and projects, in accordance with the ITU Strategy Plan and the BDT Action Plan, with the active support of all Departments, providing timely information about their development. To provide proper line management and support, the Regional Directors report to the Director of the BDT.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Area Office for South Asia and the Innovation Center are seeking an intern to support their growing needs in research and analysis. As both entities work on complex, cross-cutting regional initiatives, there is an increasing demand for in-depth data analysis, policy research, and trend identification to inform strategic decisions and program development. An intern will provide valuable support in conducting research, analyzing emerging trends, and preparing reports, enabling the team to make more data-driven decisions and enhance their impact on innovation and development in the region.
TERMS OF REFERENCE
Under the close co-ordination of Area Office for South Asia and Innovation Centre, the intern will focus on:
1. Research and Analysis: Conduct research on ICT policies, emerging technologies, and digital inclusion in South Asia.
2. Data Management and Analytics: Collect, analyze, and visualize data on ICT trends and connectivity in the region.
3. Documentation: Assist in preparing presentations, briefing notes, and communication tools related to ongoing projects.
4. SDGs Integration: Provide inputs to align research and projects with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
COMPETENCIES
Good working knowledge of the role of ICTs in other sectors (in particular training and digital services).
Excellent knowledge of MS-Word, MS-Excel and MS-PowerPoint.
Excellent research skills and very good knowledge of global trends in this area of work.
Ability to think analytically and problem solving. • Good knowledge of video conferencing and collaborative tools.
Very good oral and written communication skills.
Practical experience in the organizing and managing events would be an advantage.
QUALIFICATION REQUIRED
Education: Graduate Student or Ph.D. (candidate) in areas such as economics, social sciences, computer sciences, information technology or any other relevant field.
Experience: No work experience required.
Languages: English at advanced level.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Please note that a non-remunerated Internship position at ITU does not carry the same conditionsofemployment as a Short-term or a Fixed-term position.
Mandatory Medical Insurance, travel expenses, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or sponsoring institutions.

• Developing strategy in a cross-sectoral context.
• Addressing country’s needs in social development in the context of ICT in a strategic and regional perspective.
• Learn about latest trends in using ICT technologies for development.
The internship will be carried out remotely.
