Provides strategic insight and direction for underwriting organization for assigned lines of business. Primary lines of business include Commercial General Liability and Commercial Umbrella. Leads, researches, and coordinates the ownership, execution, strategy, administration and development of the most complex products and programs at an enterprise level. Acts as a strategic partner for branches and other corporate departments. Develops new product ideas, reviews existing and drafts new coverage language.
Is responsible for administration and oversight of ISO and proprietary rules and forms for Commercial General Liability and Commercial Umbrella. Reviews and studies proposed changes in ISO and proprietary rules, rates, and forms for assigned lines of coverage. Leads and participates in the identification, preparation and presentation of underwriting training opportunities and programs at branch and enterprise level. Influences strategies through effective and efficient communication of underwriting recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences. Provides strategy and direction for companywide strategic initiatives, working with Field and Corporate Underwriting leadership regarding short and long-term business decisions.
Essential Functions:
- Acts as a strategic partner for branches and offers technical expertise and guidance on the most complex underwriting issues.
- Assesses coverage, limits, and pricing on complex accounts.
- Analyzes premium and loss data and other key reports on monthly and quarterly basis to ensure long-term profitable growth.
- Leads the process of the developing of short- and long-term strategic product and underwriting strategies within LOB in support of enterprise-wide business and profitability goals
- Leads, directs, and performs special projects, as assigned. Provides evaluation and input regarding effectiveness of departmental programs and projects.
- Leads and participates in the identification, preparation and presentation of underwriting training opportunities and programs at branch and enterprise level.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a business or insurance related field, or equivalent relevant experience
- Ten years of experience with commercial property and casualty underwriting including at least three years of staff underwriting experience within specific line of business
- Insurance certifications, such as CPCU, AU or CIC preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Exceptional, proven knowledge of countrywide underwriting techniques, terminology, policies, and forms
- Exceptional underwriting judgment and decision-making skills
- Strong knowledge of key performance indicators (KPIs) and ways to improve them
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
- Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently and possess demonstrated problem-solving abilities
- Strong computer knowledge, Internet and keyboarding skills
- Knowledge of facultative reinsurance placement practices
- Strong ability to advise, partner, influence and effectively consult with diverse internal and external stakeholders, including senior leaders, executives, and project owners
- Strong ability to distill and communicate highly complex issues for technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong ability to translate technical ideas into more general terms for business customers
- For Casualty: Strong knowledge of retrospective rating, large risk alternative rating, and large deductibles
- Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving
Per the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the hiring range for this position for Colorado-based team members is $122,731 - $157,608. The hiring range for other locations may vary.
