Backlight’s data function is seeking an energetic manager to continue growing a data-driven culture and transform data & analytics into a center of excellence for the company. Our Data & Analytics team is responsible for warehousing, transforming, and reporting on a range of areas including financial modeling, product analytics, and internal data (such as Salesforce, Hubspot, Zendesk, and other critical business systems). The ideal candidate will manage a small team as a player-coach, contributing engineering & analyst work while managing the more junior members of the team. We're open to applications from both Canada & US. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise a team of data engineers and analysts, transparently prioritizing their work to serve the needs of stakeholders
  • Partner with executive leadership and business stakeholders to understand their data needs and deliver reporting which will support their strategic objectives
  • Identify and advocate for strategic initiatives where data can supplement the business’s goals
  • Act as the primary administrator of our data infrastructure, including our data warehouse (BigQuery), ingest pipelines (Google Functions), transformations (Dataform), reporting (Looker) and other supporting systems 
  • Create and maintain stakeholder-facing reports and the underlying data pipelines to support them
  • Develop data models to answer mission-critical questions related to financial reporting & projection and product utilization
  • Set and enforce data governance policies to keep our data clean
  • Partner with Compliance to ensure our data and retention policies are in line with the latest global regulations

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years in a hands-on data role such as Business Analyst, Data Engineer, or Data Scientist, preferably in a subscription-based business
  • 5+ years SQL & Python
  • 3+ years developing ETLs and managing data systems at scale
  • Based within 2 hours of Eastern time zone
  • Expert understanding of data warehousing technologies such as BigQuery or Snowflake
  • Demonstrated experience building performant reporting in Looker
  • Ability to coach and grow more junior analysts & data engineers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Has managed and mentored a data team
  • Experience administrating warehouses in BigQuery with Dataform
  • Familiarity with data structures in Salesforce and working with them to build custom reports in an external tool such as Looker
  • Proven ability to work remotely with international, cross-cultural teams
  • Experience working in the video streaming software space
