Job description

Title : Senior Director - Finance and Controllership

Employee Working Location : Partially Virtual / Hybrid (Saint John (NB))

Employment Status : Permanent Full-time

Salary Band : $150,000 - $165,000 / year

Responsibility 1: Staff and Operations Management Finance

  • Provides support, oversight, and direction to the Financial Shared Services (FSS) departments ensuring adequate staffing and optimal operation in accordance with CRC needs and intention.
  • Builds, develops and improves the FSS departments’ operations, processes and procedures to support the Society’s strategic direction.
  • Promotes and encourages staff participation in activities that relate to quality improvement and operational efficiency.

Responsibility 2: Accounting, Balance Sheet, and Working Capital

  • Oversees the general accounting function and leads the above-mentioned teams to maintain integrity of general ledger, sub ledger and other books of account.
  • Manages consolidated overview for accounts receivable, inventory, prepaids and accounts payable and follow up on any issues with program finance directors.
  • Monitors the above-mentioned assets and liabilities through analyzing working capital ratios, collection ratios and inventory turnover.
  • Analyses receivables, inventory and prepaids to identify possible unusual issues, risks or irregularities.
  • Investigate and implement approved bank technologies, products and services to improve cash cycle and simplify the Society’s FSS operations.
  • Manages internally and externally restricted cash reserve.

Responsibility 3: Corporate Accounting & Reporting

  • Ensures that the Society’s financial records are maintained in compliance with Society policies and GAAP; responsible for reviewing monthly/quarterly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure this compliance.
  • Oversees financial corporate reporting for government regulation or insurance by providing financial information needed to Legal, Procurement and Payroll.
  • Coordinates work relating to both internal and external audits in the interim and annual review of the Society’s financial records. Is further responsible for the implementation of agreed upon recommendations, related to areas of responsibility, resulting from the audit findings.
  • Ensures completion of Provincial and Federal tax reporting requirements (including T3010, GST/HST).
  • Prepares monthly financial statements on Pension plan, analyzing data against both the general ledger and Manulife accounts.
  • Ensures that the Society’s Pension Fund financial records, are maintained in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for pension plans; responsible for reviewing monthly/quarterly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure this compliance.
  • Coordinates work relating to Pension audit in the annual review of the Pension’s financial records. Is further responsible for the implementation of agreed upon recommendations, related to areas of responsibility, resulting from the audit findings.

Responsibility 4: Trust Funds Management

  • Leads and oversees the Trust Fund management process and the associate Revenue recognition.
  • Maintains integrity of trust ledger, prepares monthly aging of trust funds and recommends action to senior management.
  • Assigns a Trust Fund officer for the Society.
  • Oversees inter-company cash by ensuring timely rebalancing between restricted and unrestricted cash.

Responsibility 5: System and Internal Controls

  • Accountable for ensuring that internal controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance that the company assets are protected.
  • Facilitate internal controls framework development, ensuring coordination of stakeholder participation, feedback, and buy in, along with ongoing maintenance and validation of framework compliance.
  • Recommend improvements to financial systems and processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to integrate financial systems with other business systems.
  • Analyzes financial data and provide insights to management to inform decision-making in terms of financial systems and internal controls.
  • Evaluates and modifies systems and procedures to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Responsibility 6: Policy and Procedures

  • Leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of a robust set of accounting policies that clearly define rules and guidelines for preparing and presenting financial statements.
  • Ensures compliance with the existing policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the accounting policies are well communicated and understood.

What we are looking for :

  • Minimum 15 years of finance and accounting experience with progressive responsibility.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and a professional Canadian accounting designation are required.
  • Experience providing detailed analysis of financial and operational performance.
  • Experience working in non-profit environment is an asset.
  • Significant experience managing and leading people.
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex issues in plain language to non-experts and the ability to effectively collaborate with all levels of the organization, and have the ability to influence the CFO and other C-Suite executives.
  • Demonstrated project management, planning, and implementation skills to prioritize, set, communicate, monitor and meet objectives.
  • Proactive approach with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication in English and French required.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple conflicting demands, ambiguity and changing circumstances and demonstrated positive experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Comfortable in a volunteer-led organization and delivering to a volunteer-led accountability structure with a willingness to commit to the Principles of the Red Cross Movement.

Working Conditions:

  • The majority of the work is performed in an environment which is mostly clean and comfortable.
  • Travel within Canada and internationally may be required
  • Will be required to work non-traditional hours to meet the needs of donors, volunteers and during times of a disaster response and/ or appeal.
