SUMMARY:

This position is accountable for building and managing a Workers Compensation book of business, primarily by developing and maintaining productive relationships with independent agencies. The person in this position is a member of a working unit and is responsible for managing accounts that typically have estimated annual premiums below $10,000, using an underwriting platform that consists of a non-internet tiered rating system and an internet automated rating system. This person may be assigned to assist with accounts that have estimated annual premiums greater than $10,000 as required. Key priorities for the Associate Underwriter include determining risk acceptance on a book of business basis after a thorough analysis of risk exposures and existing loss controls for new and existing accounts that are underwritten manually, verifying risk acceptance. Applying basic knowledge of Workers Compensation rules and MEM underwriting guidelines; and providing enhanced service for all customers. Policy issuance, renewal review and maintenance, including all mid-term endorsements, cancellations, and reinstatements, are integral parts of this job. The Associate Underwriter will manage a significant volume of telephone calls from producers and policyholders and will work in a team environment, completing and coordinating activities toward the successful handling of a book of business.

  • Understand and adhere to MEM’s underwriting philosophy, rating methodology and guidelines. Review new business and renewal proposals to ensure acceptability and completeness of underwriting and rating information, providing price quotations for underwriters and referring unusual or complex cases to senior colleagues.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic underwriting principles and risk characteristics by independently managing individual assigned book of business with minimal supervision. Gather, monitor , and analyze risk data and recommend further investigation. Involves using established risk management models, systems, and protocols and working under direction.
  • Understands regulatory rules, policies, and procedures and effectively employs that knowledge in day to day work activities. Carry out a wide range of compliance monitoring activities and give basic advice on compliance and regulatory requirements. Ensure policy corrections or change endorsements to the name, address, class, rate tier, payroll, and NCCI experience modifications and contractors credit are issued correctly by correctly interpreting and applying appropriate workers compensation rules to all changes.
  • Correspond with agents/producers and policyholders regarding the acceptance or rejection of coverage, endorsements to policies, rating, pricing, etc. or to obtain additional information to support sound underwriting decisions and applying appropriate workers compensation laws and rules to all changes. Professionally communicate underwriting analysis, pricing decisions and actions
  • Prepare moderately complex documents using a variety of applications for technology devices, such as standard office software. Also responsible for gathering and summarizing data for reports.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the organization's policies and procedures and of relevant regulatory codes and codes of conduct to ensure own work adheres to those standards. Obtain authorization from a supervisor or manager for any exceptions from mandatory procedure.
  • Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching. Develop and maintain an understanding of relevant technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
  • Provide a high level of service to producers and policyholders by meeting prescribed quality, time and compliance standards. May participate in projects and committees both within the underwriting department and other departments to achieve company and department objectives . This could include formally presenting information to various groups. Provide information and clarification on existing procedures, processes, and precedents.

Bachelor’s degree in business administration , Insurance and Risk Management, or a directly related field, or the equivalent combination of education and Underwriting experience is require d

Designations/Certifications:

  • Insurance industry coursework, such as INS or AU, is desired. Pursuit of CPCU designation is encouraged.


Licenses

  • A valid drivers’ license is required .


Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of general workers compensation and/or other insurance experience with emphasis in property and casualty experience is required
