Our Corporate Legal team plays a crucial role in supporting State Fund’s mission by representing us in administrative and court disputes, offering legal advice, representation, and training to high-level executives, internal partners, and other state departments across various areas of business and government law.


We are actively seeking a highly experienced litigation attorney with a proven track record of leading a litigation team and first chair trial or jury trial experience.

Telework may be available and is subject to change based on State Fund guidelines and business needs. Some travel may be required.


This position may be filled in one of the following locations: Sacramento, Pleasanton, Santa Ana, Glendale or San Diego. Please indicate your preferred location on your application.



Under the direction and supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel, you will:

  • Represents State Fund in handling/litigating the most complex, sensitive, and difficult** civil cases Provide corporate advice and transactional matters and assignments necessary to defending and reducing State Fund’s legal exposure
  • Handle civil litigation before State or Federal Courts, administrative agencies, and arbitration boards and/or representation in connection with corporate advice matters and transactions
  • Participate and act in a lead capacity on matters
  • Conduct contract review and negotiation; addressing regulatory matters; participating in task forces and legal projects, and conducting legal research
  • Advise State Fund’s Directors, Executives, Officers, Managers, Attorneys, Employees and Representatives, and stakeholders


The Attorney V will act as lead attorney and does not directly supervise attorney staff. The Attorney V may act in a lead capacity on cases, including the assignment and delegation of tasks, and mentor over Attorney IV, Attorney III and Attorney as necessary.



Desirable Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess the following skills and abilities:

  • Proven track record of serving as lead counsel in trials before State or Federal Courts
  • Ability to handle and litigate complex civil cases and corporate matters independently
  • Experience handling exceptionally difficult legal matters with a high level of specialization
  • Experience providing legal advice, representation, and training to high-level executives, internal partners, and other state departments
  • Exceptional legal acumen and proficiency in legal research and analysis
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including mentoring and guiding junior legal staff
  • Experience handling cases with significant impact on the organization’s business environment, including those with high stakes, complexity, or media exposure


The ideal candidate for this position is a seasoned litigation attorney adept at handling high-stakes legal matters, delivering strategic legal advice to senior leadership, and contributing to the organization’s overall objectives and success.
