Position Summary

The Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a National Cancer Institute supported clinical trials group, is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. The COG unites more than 10,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 200 leading children’s hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across North America, Australia, and New Zealand in the fight against childhood cancer. Our goal is to cure all children and adolescents with cancer, reduce the short and long-term complications of cancer treatments, and determine the causes and find ways to prevent childhood cancer.

We are seeking an experienced Learning and Development Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing training programs that enhance employee skills and support organizational goals. This role involves collaborating with various departments to identify learning needs and developing learning strategies to address them. Additionally, the specialist will lead and contribute to various projects aimed at improving key functions and employee professional development. This position will report to the Senior Director of Staff Operations.

This is a time limited, remote, and full-time position. The expected end date of the position will be determined upon hire and can change based on business and budget needs. The estimated duration of the position is 7 – 11 months. At PHI, a time-limited position is defined as regular employment with an expected end date of no more than one year from the beginning of the position. In rare circumstances, time-limited positions may be extended to a maximum total length of up to eighteen (18) months from the start of the employee’s original time-limited position. The candidate must reside within the United States.

Full salary range for this position: $68,581 to $99,425 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $68,581 (minimum) to $84,003 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Training Program Development: Design, develop, promote, and lead engaging training programs and create materials that address the needs of different departments within the organization
  • Needs Assessment: Conduct needs assessment and gather feedback to identify skills gaps and areas for improvement
  • Evaluation: Evaluate and track the effectiveness of training programs through assessments, surveys, feedback, and metrics. Adjust learning programs as necessary to improve outcomes
  • Collaboration: Work closely with department leads, managers and Program Administration team to align training initiatives with business goals and ensure relevant content
  • Program Delivery: Facilitate training sessions, workshops and interactive activities remotely. Ensure the delivery of high-quality and impactful learning experiences. This will include schedule coordination, developing agendas, content, finding speakers, distributing and collecting evaluations, and facilitating
  • Learning Management: Develop, implement, manage, and maintain the COG Learning Management System (LMS), including course creation, compliance training, onboarding sessions, work with an instructional designer, tracking, and reporting
  • Employee Development: Provide coaching and guidance to employees on career development and professional growth opportunities. Develop materials relevant to professional development opportunities and recommend trainings for employees
  • Management Development: Develop and implement learning strategies including trainings, resources, materials, and guidance on various leadership and management topics at the COG manager meetings. This may include creating yearly topics in advance, distributing of materials, facilitating interactive learning activities, and posting relevant training materials in the internal managers space and sharing best practices
  • Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI): Conduct training and workshops to raise awareness and enhance understanding of REDI issues, fostering a more inclusive and culturally competent workforce. Establish and maintain metrics to measure the effectiveness of the REDI trainings, regularly assessing progress and making data-driven recommendations for improvement
  • Compliance: Ensure that training programs meet regulatory requirements. Follow-up with staff for completion of required trainings. Maintain records and documentation as required
  • Research & Innovation: Stay informed on the latest trends and industry best practices in learning and development. Incorporate new methodologies and software into training programs
  • Project Management: Participate in various projects, such as enhancing performance management systems, supporting organizational change efforts, implementing new systems, review onboarding trainings, and much more. Collaborate with Program Administration team to drive project success and achieve project goals. Manage project timelines and deliverables related to different initiatives. Provide regular updates and reports on project progress
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Create and maintain SOPs for training and development. Review, identify gaps and solutions within existing SOPs
  • Act as first contact for training questions and respond to various employee inquiries or refer employees to the appropriate contact
  • Serve as a backup to Program Administration team day-to-day responsibilities for cross coverage
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Learning/Training and Development and Human Resources
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Education, or related degree; or substitute with four additional years of relevant experience

Other Qualifications

  • Certification in Learning and Development (e.g., CPLP, SHRM-SCP) is a plus
  • Experience managing Human Resources projects is highly desirable
  • Experience developing and delivering professional trainings remotely
  • Understanding of workforce development, adult learning, Human Resources, and professional development best practices to support, engage, and encourage a diverse workforce
  • Knowledge of and strong commitment to addressing Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills as well as knowledge of people-centered educational methodologies and techniques
  • Ability to assess and identify training needs effectively; ability to answer questions and provide technical assistance to staff
  • Proficient in using Learning Management Systems (LMS), project management tools and other training tools
  • Strong organizational and project management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Innovative and proactive mindset

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and as part of a team
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to details

  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Human Resources software
  • Master’s degree preferred
