Job Description:

We are seeking a motivated Veterinary Technician to join the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM). The DLAM provides husbandry and health to university owned research and teaching animals. The job is full time and the position will help support the animal care program for species used in research and teaching at LSU A&M. The veterinary technician will be expected to work with a broad range of animals including but not limited to the following: rodents, cats, dogs, swine, cattle, goats, reptiles (including snakes), amphibians, birds and fish. With experience the veterinary technician will also participate in and organize training of professional students, research faculty, staff, and students, and DLAM staff. Many research projects investigate animal and human infectious diseases.

Job Responsibilities:

70% - Service: This position will assist the laboratory animal medicine residents with routine medical care and may be assigned to provide care directly as needed. The veterinary technician will help develop and implement our quality control program which includes biological controls, microbiological testing, and water testing. Expected to organize and implement routine preventative care for a broad range of species. Expected to participate in research protocols, as assigned, primarily to assist in animal handling, anesthesia, and post-operative care. The veterinary technician will ensure DLAM pharmacies are properly stocked and organized. Lastly, they will be expected to help provide husbandry if DLAM is short staffed or in disaster events.

25% - Teaching: With experience the veterinary technician will participate in and organize training of professional students, research faculty, staff, and students, and DLAM staff. Specific classes would include professional student Phase II rotations, wet labs for Phase I students and BRCC veterinary technician students.

5% - Research: On occasion and with experience, this position may be assigned to help with various research studies as part of the research team. These will be assigned and discussed as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 4 years of experience.

Degree Substitute - Associate's degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience; OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience; OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

CVT, RVT, LVT Certified, Registered or Licensed Veterinary Technician. Experience with MSExcel and Cornerstone.

Special and Physical Qualifications:

Vehicle Operation - University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

Safety and Security Sensitive Job - Safety and security-sensitive positions are defined as those positions where any form of substance abuse may affect University activities through unsafe work behavior/performance or error in judgment; or where substance abuse could jeopardize the safety and well-being of employees, other personnel, or the general public, or cause significant damage to University property. This includes positions requiring firearms, access to controlled substances, handling hazardous material, operating heavy equipment or machinery, etc. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

Essential Personnel - This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.

Required to be capable of lifting 50+ pounds, sitting, walking, standing, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, twisting, pushing/pulling, grasping, and squatting.
