Job description

About 1Password
At 1Password, we’re building the foundation for a safe, productive digital future. Our mission is to unleash employee productivity without compromising security by ensuring every identity is authentic, every application sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted. We innovated the market-leading enterprise password manager and pioneered Extended Access Management, a new cybersecurity category built for the way people and AI agents work today. As one of the most loved brands in cybersecurity, we take a human-centric approach in everything from product strategy to user experience. Over 165,000 businesses and millions of people trust us to provide seamless, secure access to their most critical information.

If you're excited about the opportunity to contribute to the digital safety of millions, to work alongside a team of curious, driven individuals, and to solve hard problems in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, then we want to hear from you. Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.

We are looking for a Staff Technical Program Manager (TPM) to join our growing team of TPMs. The Staff TPM will be responsible for leading back-end focused initiatives that are highly complex and foundational to the success of our product. This role sits at the intersection of Product and Engineering, ensuring our backend services scale to support delightful, secure, and performant user experiences. The ideal candidate excels at navigating ambiguity, leading by example at scale, and flexing between large and small programs to meet evolving business needs. The Staff TPM influences commitment, leads teams toward impactful outcomes, and balances strategic wins with incremental success.

The TPM team at 1Password acts as a force multiplier for the Tech organization by driving cross-functional and technical initiatives. We align teams both inside and outside of Tech to enable timely decisions, uncover gaps, and guide programs towards well-defined, successful outcomes. We use our communication, technical, and organizational skills to help the entire Tech org solve its highest priority problems. The TPM org supports programs across Product, Engineering, Security, DevOps, Data and IT.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we're looking for:
  • 10+ years of technical program management experience, with a strong track record in backend-focused initiatives.
  • Accomplished leader with a deep understanding of backend architecture, including distributed systems, microservices, APIs, event-driven design, and cloud platforms (e.g. GCP).
  • Demonstrated success leading major migrations and refactors (e.g. monolith to microservices, cloud modernization), with strong outcomes in performance, scalability, and observability.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with Product and Engineering to align backend services with user and business needs, balancing product goals with technical trade-offs.
  • Skilled in stakeholder management and decision-making, including conflict resolution, shared planning, and setting incremental success metrics across Product and Engineering.
  • Strong program leadership - able to manage roadmaps, coordinate cross-team dependencies, and lead multi-phase rollouts while navigating trade-offs between scope, tech debt, and performance to balance user experience with technical excellence.
  • Exceptional communicator with experience presenting to technical and non-technical audiences through program documentation, dashboards and executive summaries.
  • Fluent with collaboration and planning tools such as Jira, Notion, Slack, and Figma.
  • A profound respect for user privacy and information security.

  • What you can expect:
  • Own and lead high-impact, complex and/or ambiguous initiatives that enable backend capabilities and support user-facing product features.
  • Identify systemic challenges and design simple, scalable, and resilient processes and solutions for teams.
  • Lead org-wide improvements in how we execute programs, influencing tooling, planning cadences, and cross-team alignment practices.
  • Build deep understanding of 1Password’s full technical stack to facilitate technical conversations - dive deep into technical systems while driving cross-cutting strategic impact across teams.
  • Define and deliver roadmaps in close partnership with Product and Engineering, facilitating planning, scoping, and sequencing of backend work to ensure seamless delivery of cross-functional initiatives.
  • Mentor TPMs and help mature program practices across the tech org.
  • Adopt AI-driven tools and workflows to enhance program execution to improve delivery and clarity across Product and Tech teams.
  • Ask lots of questions, learn from any failures, and continually stretch yourself.
  • Keep security and privacy front of mind in all aspects of your work.
  • USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $168,000 USD and $228,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.

Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $143,000 CAD and $193,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.

At 1Password, we approach each individual's compensation with a promise of fair market value and internal equity commensurate with experience and specific skill set.

    Our culture
At 1Password, we prioritize collaboration, clear and transparent communication, receptiveness to feedback, and alignment with our core values: keep it simple, lead with honesty, and put people first.

You’ll be part of a team that challenges the status quo, and is excited to experiment and iterate in search of the best solution. That said, 1Password is not for everyone. Our work is demanding, we strive for excellence, and the pace is fast. We need people who are keen to take on challenging problems, who seek feedback to grow, and who are driven to make an impact. If you're looking for a place where you can settle into a comfortable routine, this might not be the right fit for you. We’re looking for individuals who are proven experts in their fields, as well as those who are highly adaptable, can thrive in ambiguity and through change, are curious, and above all deliver results.

We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology—including AI—to achieve our mission. We also understand that thinking critically about AI in its current forms will help us create better solutions for our customers and ourselves with its future forms, which will help us continue to close the gap between security and privacy and achieve our mission. We want team members at all levels to take the approach of actively learning AI best practices, identifying opportunities to apply AI in meaningful ways, and driving innovative solutions in their daily work. Embracing the future of AI isn't just encouraged at 1Password—it's an essential part of how we will be successful at 1Password.

    Our approach to remote work
We believe in the power of remote work, but recognize that in-person connection is important to help us achieve our mission. While we are a remote-first company, travel for in-person engagement is a part of most roles.
