Job description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

As part of Waymo's Legal team, you will work on the exciting legal issues surrounding our transformational autonomous driving technology and help drive our business lines forward from technology ideation through scaled commercial deployment. We partner with our public policy, safety, security and privacy experts to define transportation policy for the autonomous driving world to come, advising on regulatory changes that support and protect our users around the world. We collaborate with our engineering, product, strategy and operations teams to develop and protect our intellectual property portfolio and drive our corporate and commercial transactions. We ensure compliance with an increasingly complex and dynamic range of global regulations. And we anticipate, mitigate, and litigate high-profile and precedent-setting legal matters.

You will work remotely and report into our Regulatory Compliance team.

In this role you'll:

  • Partner with Waymo's vendors to ensure compliant autonomous vehicle operators, performing daily and weekly tasks to support the vendors' onboarding and offboarding of their employees

  • Prepare and submit external data reports, mainly concerning collision incidents, to state, federal, and international regulators, balancing independent responsibilities with active participation in a rotational team
  • Assemble and manage documentation observing Waymo's documentation policies
  • Support ad hoc projects to respond to regulator requests for data
  • Directly manage a temp worker to further support the above work

At a minimum we'd like you to have:

  • At least 4 years of experience involving regulatory compliance, legal support, or substantial collaboration with legal or compliance functions. Experience gained in an environment where safety is a core operational value is highly regarded
  • Experience directly managing or working with extended workforce partners, including managing to ensure compliance requirements or other measurable needs are met
  • A high standard of accuracy in all communications
  • Experience analyzing processes to identify potential gaps, inefficiencies, or opportunities for enhancement
  • Contribute to problem resolution by working effectively with others, proposing innovative solutions, and seeing them through
  • Ability to conceptualize turning repetitive tasks into automated workflows

It's preferred if you have:

  • Technical skills with proprietary software
  • High EQ with personally responsible, team player mentality
  • Experience assembling and submitting regulatory reports to regulators
  • Perform both manual, tedious tasks, and to lead the conceptualization and operationalization of new processes that improve and close gaps in existing flows
  • A focus on driver compliance programs, including motor vehicle records, background checks, and drug and alcohol testing programs
