Substation Technicians are responsible for producing 3D physical design packages in Inventor (including accurate electrical construction drawings and material lists) based on an electrical one-line diagram. The design package will meet all industry and customer standards providing all details necessary to construct the product seamlessly in the field. In addition to the adherence to standards and practices, the Substation Technician will be required to utilize subjective design principles to modify drawings, within specifications, to offer some visual appeal and continuity within the design.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
• Experienced in operating Substation Design Software (Inventor, Vault, AutoCAD and Revit).
• Experienced in reading and comprehending customer specifications.
• Has an experienced knowledge of Major and Minor equipment.
• Has an experienced knowledge of base electrical codes and substation design standards.
• Has an experienced knowledge of substation design principles and how to apply them (clearances, ampacity, corona, effects of altitude, detailing principles, etc.).
• Experienced in his/her ability to read and understand One-Line Diagrams.
• Has the knowledge to create fully adaptive 3D models using INVENTOR software.
• Experienced in creating accurate, fully adaptive Layout sketches (B.O.P) for Master Assemblies.
• Experienced in creating accurate 3D structural models of low profile steel structures (bus supports, switch stands, metering stands, etc.).
• Proficient in creating accurate 3D structural models of complex steel structures (bent plate structures, A-Frames, lattice, etc.).
• Experienced in creating comprehendible construction drawings and plan views (General Arrangements, Shop Fabrication Drawings, Anchor Bolt Plans & Details, Foundation Plans & Details, Lighting Plans, Static Protection Plans, Below Grade Grounding Plans and Details and accurate bolt counts & tube cutting schedules).
• Experienced with performing Copy/Design functions within VAULT.
• Has proficient ability to formulate a comprehensive Bill of Material from a conceptual customer drawing.
• Has proficient ability to create accurate and complete general arrangement designs & drawings from a customer one-line diagram.
• Has proficient ability in improving gross profit by specifying more economical materials or overall layouts.
• Has proficient ability to work closely with engineers and other designers to produce innovative substation designs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Creating general arrangement drawings
• Creating grounding plans and details
• Creating checking lightning coverage (shielding) plans
• Creating checking lighting plans
• Creating checking sag and tension charts/drawings
• Creating checking material lists
• Assembling catalog cuts of equipment and/or material for construction reference manuals
• Creating tube cutting schedules
• Creating bolt counts
• Creating structural shop and erection drawings (Ex. steel details, pfb details, etc.).
• Communicates with product vendors, internal departments and customer representatives.
• Contributes to problem solving issues between design teams and departments
• Recognizes and recommends methods to improve every customer’s experience
• Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Substation Engineering Manager
EXPECTATIONS:
• Performs quality work within deadlines without direct supervision.
• Interacts professionally with other employees and customers.
• Demonstrates integrity and ethics in all client relationships and communications.
• Communicates regularly with supervisor and teams regarding designs, concerns, studies or tests.
• Desires to participate in continued education and training.
• Overnight travel to active job sites.
• Must have clean driving record as use of company vehicles is a requirement of position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in high voltage substation design is preferred (including but not limited to: general arrangements, conduit design, grounding design, lighting design and material and equipment specification)
• Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field, such as Engineering, Engineering Technology, Simulation Animation or a related field from an accredited college or University.
• A suitable combination of education, training, and/or experience in 3D modeling and/or Auto Cad software will be considered in lieu of a BS degree.
• Experience with AutoDesk Inventor, Revit and Vault
• Strong background in AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required; strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Will work in an office environment with minimal exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental hazards.
• Occasionally overnight travel is required to an active construction site for a period of one or two weeks at a time
• This position may occasionally require work to be completed in the field. When asked to do so, the conditions and requirements change to address special needs while working on an active job site. Please refer to the addendum “Working in the Field” for information about requirements and conditions to be met while working in the field.
