POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Director, Coding is responsible for oversight of the Medical Coding function for AMSURG. This includes oversight of onshore staff and offshore vendors that perform the analysis of medical records and apply the appropriate CPT, ICD-10, and modifiers to patient medical records submitted to the Revenue Cycle Management Department for processing.

Work Schedule: This is a remote position, allowing the Senior Director, Coding to be based anywhere in the country. Limited travel within Nashville, TN (20%)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Management- Oversight and supervision of the Central Billing Office’s (CBO) coding, quality assurance, and audit team members. Train, optimize staffing levels based on production expectations, and problem resolution. Design and develop the appropriate organization structure for the Revenue Cycle Coding team. Interview, hires on-board and perform evaluations of assigned team members, recommending merit increases, promotions, and/or corrective actions.
  • Coding and Quality Assurance- Oversee the daily operations of medical coding, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in alignment with industry and center SLA of >95%. Ongoing optimization of quality assurance program across internal, vendor and third-party audit data. Manage solution to achieve minimum coding quality at a center level. 
  • Vendor Management- Oversight and optimization of third-party vendors. Includes development of vendor scorecards, ongoing quality, and vendor SLA monitoring. Provide oversight and input to enable vendor to optimize coding automation model.
  • Training and Development- Oversee the development of training programs for coding and compliance teams to ensure up-to-date knowledge of regulations and coding practices. Conduct educational sessions for US and Global staff, providers, and Centers on compliance topics, including new policies, coding standards, and audit findings. Encourage professional growth and certification for coding staff to maintain industry standards.
  • Client Relationship Management- Serve as the primary escalation point of contact for Centers regarding coding and compliance matters, providing guidance, support, and insight. Conduct meetings with Centers to discuss coding quality assurance outcomes, trends, and corrective action plans as appropriate.
  • Clinical Documentation- Identify opportunities for clinical documentation improvement from Quality Assurance team, Audits and or Regulatory updates. Work with clinical team to address provider education and opportunities to extend education across CBO and Non-CBO teams.
  • Coding Guidelines - Proactively stay abreast of new and existing coding guidelines pertinent to AMSURG service lines. Ensure all coding activities comply with ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and other applicable coding systems.
  • Key Performance Indicators -Advance Revenue Cycle Coding Performance Metrics and Standards tracking for onshore staff and third- party vendors. Includes Charge capture, coding days metrics, coding automation rates, and coding denial rates.   Prepare reports and  statistics using AMSURG and vendor reporting/measurement tools.  
  • Policies and Procedures- Develop, evaluate, implement, and maintain policies and procedures to ensure standard operating procedures are adhered to with regard to coding compliance. Identify applicability and extend across non-CBO RCM models when appropriate.
  • Financial Management- Ensure that operating expenses are well within the prescribed limits of budget plans and fiscal guidelines. Participate in development and implementation of objectives, short- and long-term planning and goals, and projects and programs to assist in the accomplishment of established goals.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all Protected Healthcare Information as defined by HIPAA.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including Information Security Policies and ensure that AMSURG remains as secure as possible.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Position Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required:

  • 8-10 years of experience in revenue cycle management.
  • 5-7 years in a Director or equivalent leadership position in medical coding and billing enterprises.
  • Offshore coding vendor management experience. 
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with 8+ years of related experience and 5-7+ years of management experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Coding certification (CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P, CEMC, CPMA or RHIT).
  • Experience utilizing coding automation a plus.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven analytical skills, comfortable with common reporting platforms such as BI, Tableau, etc.
  • Able to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experience working both independently, and in team-oriented, collaborative environments.
  • Strong communication skills among team, corporate office, and senior management in all areas.
  • Microsoft Office Suite, especially advanced Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Coding Vendors and workflow applications.
