Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:
-PhD in psychology, human development and family studies, educational policy, sociology, or a related field
-Advanced proficiency in dataset management and analytics using Stata, R, and/or other specialized statistical software
-Evidence of successful fundraising (grants and contracts)
-Strong record of analytic writing in the areas of early childhood, childcare, or family studies including evidence of publication-Experience analyzing national datasets such as the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort, National Databased of Child Care Prices or Child Care Licensing, and/or other population-level (national or state) data
-Experience conducting advanced quantitative analyses including longitudinal and multilevel modeling, profile analysis (latent class), and propensity score analysis
-Demonstrated experience translating quantitative findings for both academic and non-academic audiences

Job Description:

The Iowa’s Integrated Data System for Decision-Making (I2D2) at Iowa State University invites applications for a Research Scientist IV to join a dynamic and highly collaborative research team focused on early childhood policy and systems. This senior-level position offers the opportunity to work on federally and state-funded research projects in partnership with agencies such as the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Education, and the Iowa Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, Management, and Workforce Development.

The Research Scientist IV will play a central role in advancing policy-relevant research related to early childhood programs, with a particular emphasis on the childcare sector. The ideal candidate will bring deep content expertise in childcare systems, early childhood workforce development, and the intersection of childcare with other early childhood services, including home visiting, public health, and child welfare.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and support research projects on early childhood policy and systems, with a focus on childcare and early learning workforce issues.

  • Design and implement mixed-methods studies using national and state administrative data, as well as qualitative methods (e.g., surveys, focus groups).

  • Conduct advanced statistical analyses and manage large, complex datasets.

  • Develop high-impact communication materials including policy briefs, infographics, presentations, and academic publications.

  • Engage with government partners, funders, and community stakeholders to translate findings into actionable recommendations.

  • Lead and contribute to grant writing, fundraising, and business development to support future research.

  • Supervise and mentor data analysts, graduate students, and other research staff.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and contribute to a supportive, equity-focused team environment.


Appointment Type: Term (1 year, with potential for renewal based on continued funding)

This position is authorized to work remote in the United States. Candidates must be residing in the United States and be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for current or future sponsorship.
