The Senior Underwriting Consultant is an expert technical underwriting resource for all underwriters and claims consultants. This role will act as a field management liaison and make critical decisions, balancing business decisions against mortality/morbidity assessments, while reviewing escalated issues pertaining to New Business applications and policy changes. This includes negotiations with reinsurers, where required as well. This role also supports a training environment which encourages the development of exceptional skills by all underwriters in New Business Services. This individual will also be required to work on a number of New Business related projects.

 

How you will create impact:
  • Be available as an expert resource for all members of the underwriting team, providing exceptional decisions on life and living benefits pending applications and policy changes where there exists a need for in-depth technical knowledge
  • Provide exceptional business decisions, effectively weighing mortality considerations against marketing issues and by consulting with reinsurers
  • Be available as an expert resource to the life claims personnel, when technical underwriting decisions are required; review contentious policy claims and correspond with reinsurers as required
  • Work closely with NBS Risk Manager to represent New Business at Product Development meetings and provide input from an underwriting perspective; also review new product specifications from an underwriting perspective and provide feedback to Risk Manager and Product Development steering committee
  • Provide input regarding updates to procedures to underwriting trainer; this includes updates to underwriting manuals, resource guides, field risk guides and Life Pages
  • Facilitate underwriter training sessions and case clinics in collaboration with trainer and underwriting manager to enhance underwriter knowledge, keep underwriters current on industry trends, and ensure consistency of Co-operators underwriting philosophy and decisions
  • Investigate and resolve all cases escalated from senior field partners
  • Ensure all contentious underwriting situations are investigated and resolved, by balancing the best interest of our clients against mortality/morbidity controls, underwriting guidelines and reinsurance treaty rules

Expected Salary Range: $88,838 -- $148,063
*The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Co-operators in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education.
