Job description

Organization Overview

UNICEF USA (“UUSA” or “We”) relentlessly pursues a more equitable world for every child, upholding the rights of all children and empowering every child, everywhere. We also support the fundamental belief that children should have a voice and role in shaping their futures and the futures of their communities.
Over eight decades, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has built an unprecedented global support system for the world’s children, and has boldly taken on the biggest, seemingly impossible challenges facing children. UNICEF relentlessly works day in and day out to deliver the essentials that give every child an equitable chance in life: health care and immunizations, safe water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. UNICEF USA advances the global mission of UNICEF by rallying the American public to support the world’s most vulnerable children.
We know that sustainable change is attainable, but it can’t be achieved alone. It takes a committed team – individuals, governments, corporations, volunteers and staff – who demonstrate a relentless commitment to working tirelessly, day in and day out in some of the toughest, hardest to reach places. Big problems need big solutions, and we harness our collective, global voice and energy to do more good, in more places for children.  We will never stop supporting UNICEF to develop smarter, more cost-effective solutions; scaling up proven, data-driven programs; and harnessing new technologies to create measurable change for children.
UUSA is organized under the laws of New York State as a not-for-profit corporation. As such, UUSA is a tax-exempt organization as defined under Section 501C(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is governed by an independent, non-salaried Board of Directors.

Position Description

The Deputy Director, Philanthropy Data Strategy, (DD) reports to the Managing Director, Prospect Development (MD) and is responsible for leading data-related initiatives and data strategy to support data-informed decision making within the Philanthropy division. The DD is the primary Philanthropy liaison to the Technology division and the organization-wide data strategy, and a central coordinator for Philanthropy-wide projects involving data architecture, reporting, and analytics. The DD directly supervises Philanthropy Insight staff in managing a queue of data management and reporting requests. The DD partners with the Vice President, Philanthropy Insight (VP) and the Philanthropy leadership team to address fundraising opportunities and challenges with technical or data-informed solutions.

Position Responsibilities

Data Strategy and Governance (40%)

  • In partnership with Technology, develop and implement data strategy for Philanthropy – including system and team-specific roadmaps. Identify areas where data can be used to drive fundraising efficiency and growth, define key performance indicators (KPIs), and identify data sources and structures to support decision-making across the division.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement along the data roadmap. Identify opportunities to experiment with new technologies and techniques such as predictive analytics, AI/ML, and automation.
  • Build relationships with frontline fundraisers, leadership, and other Philanthropy staff to identify user needs around data and analytics. Partner with other Insight teams (Prospect Intelligence, Relationship Management, Donor Revenue Management and Records, Donor Relations) in translating user needs into technical requirements.
  • Serve as the primary Philanthropy liaison to the Technology team and a central coordinator for all Philanthropy-related technical requests. Partner with Technology Project Management Office (PMO) to evaluate, prioritize, and plan technical projects from Philanthropy – within an Agile project management framework.
  • Connect Technology with the appropriate Philanthropy stakeholders to advise on the design and integration of core data systems for Philanthropy including Blackbaud CRM, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, NetSuite ERP, enterprise data warehouse (EDW), Power BI, and more.
  • Drive or delegate, where appropriate, requirements gathering and User Acceptance Testing (UAT) phases for new or improved Technology products such as database configuration changes and new feature creation, data vendor integrations, data imports & exports, report & dashboard development, and self-service analytics tools.
  • Partner with Philanthropy Insight and Technology team members to document data flows, definitions, and other procedures to support data governance and efficiency.
  • Promote data competencies within Philanthropy through training, education, and collaboration with “super users.” Serve as the subject matter expert on Philanthropy's self-service data (EDW data sets, Power BI, Blackbaud CRM query).

Reporting & Analytics (25%)

  • Develop data analyses, reports, and dashboards using Blackbaud CRM query and other database exports, Excel, and Power BI (semantic models for self-service analytics). Prepare clear and concise data visualizations in Excel, Powerpoint, and Power BI to support leadership decision making.
  • Develop forward looking data models including predictive, revenue forecasting, lifetime value, and more. Where appropriate, provide input on consultant modeling projects.
  • Supervise and support two team members in managing a ticketing system (Freshservice) for data import/export and reporting requests from Philanthropy staff.

Management & Leadership (35%)

  • Supervise two team members and encourage their professional growth through situational leadership, goal setting, and consistent feedback. Train or coach team members to develop their technical, communication, and project management skills.
  • Support and contribute to team culture by modeling the Philanthropy Insight Standards of Collaboration, participating in an Agile approach to workload management.
  • Pursue learning and professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices and trends in the fields of fundraising, prospect development, and data analytics.
  • Adhere to professional standards outlined in the Apra Statement of Ethics, aasp Statement of Ethics, IRS charitable gift guidelines and Financial Accounting Standards Board, and UNICEF USA’s gift acceptance policy and confidentiality statement.

Qualifications:

  • At least 6 - 8 of experience in database management, data strategy, data governance, or data analytics, with experience leading complex data-related projects.
  • Experience as a CRM database “power user” or administrator with the ability to interact with, query, and speak the language of database configuration and features (Blackbaud CRM preferred). Experience working with multiple interconnected systems and platforms.
  • Knowledge of best practices in data governance, data quality, and data management, including an understanding of data privacy and security regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose problems and translate user needs into technical requirements.
  • Experience in Agile project management methodologies and working with cross-functional teams to deliver projects on time and within budget. Experience with project management software such as Trello, Jira, or Asana.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills, with the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience developing reports and dashboards using Business Intelligence platforms (Power BI experience strongly preferred) and/or experience guiding or advising the deployment of BI platforms.
  • Proficient in Excel-based data analysis techniques such as pivot tables, lookups, and power query. Familiarity with more advanced analysis tools such as SQL, R, or Python helpful but not required.
  • Experience managing at least one direct report.
  • Familiarity with the competencies outlined in Apra’s Body of Knowledge, with expertise in the Data Science domain and working knowledge of the Prospect Research and Relationship Management domains.
