This position is with the Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC), a global network of communications professionals in the field of climate, energy and nature. GSCC is a programme hosted by the Meliore Foundation.

We're looking for an innovative Communications Associate, Metallurgical (MET) Coal with a unique combination of skills who wants to play a major role in tackling climate change.

You'll be joining our Global Energy Team and report to the Global Energy Senior Lead. The MET Coal Associate will liaise with partners and plan strategic communications to accelerate coal phaseouts from the steel industry. The job holder will be self-driven and understand the steel manufacturing process and its impact on the global climate crisis. The candidate should have prior experience in communication.

This job description is for a full time role focused on metallurgical coal strategic communications to work alongside key GSCC country desks, including Australia, Canada, Japan, South Africa and the USA country desks.

How you'll contribute

• Co-develop and implement GSCC met coal strategy in coordination with relevant GSCC country desks, thematic teams, and partner organisations, Under the guidance of the Senior Lead, create a cohesive and impactful narrative that drives short-term impact.


• Actively track industry, public and media debates around met coal use in the steel industry. Create weekly and quarterly media intelligence reports to share within the GSCC network as well as with external partners.


• Identify narrative gaps and key moments to intervene and strategically shape the conversation


• Under the guidance of senior colleagues, develop and maintain a diverse network of partners and contacts (such as research and consultancy firms, analysts, think tanks, academics, corporate, correspondents, editors, etc.) across sectors


• Working in lock-step with GSCC insights and investigations teams: for example to gather and analyze baseline research, provide data-driven insights to inform communications efforts.


• Contribute to the development of structures and approaches that can react quickly to emerging opportunities and changes in the external context


• Provide strategic communications and media relations support and advice to partners and being a first contact point for them


• Coordinate the launch of partner reports and media content across the global network


• Based on ongoing strategic, action-oriented analysis of media debates, identify, recruit and train new voices to deploy at key moments in debates


• Any other duties to be assigned from time to time

Our ideal candidate has

• Professional experience in journalism, strategic communications, or campaigning


• Strong understanding of the energy industry and its political landscape; familiarity with the steelmaking process is a plus


• Proven skills to produce engaging and impactful written materials


• Digital/social media skills, or a willingness to learn


• A genuine interest in and passion for addressing climate change


• Fluency in written and spoken English, our working language; additional languages are an asset


• The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers.


• The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack and email (Google Workspace).
