Job description

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

Coinbase is on a mission to increase economic freedom in the world, and we do this by building a trusted platform for accessing the digital asset economy. The Policy team plays a critical role in shaping the emerging regulatory landscape by helping policy makers understand existing practices and implement efficient compliance frameworks that support innovation while ensuring consumer and investor protection.

We are seeking a seasoned Securities Markets Lawyer or Specialist to join our Regulatory Policy team. The ideal candidate will have (1) a deep understanding of existing U.S. securities laws and practices as they relate to traditional broker dealers and securities trading, (2) working knowledge of the securities issuance processes, and (3) an ability to translate this experience into workable solutions for taking securities markets digitally native. As a member of the team you will be responsible for developing and delivering policy positions on the appropriate regulation of digital asset products, services, and practices, particularly those whose features or designs could implicate securities laws.

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Developing a regulatory strategy for digital asset securities in support of a new financial market structure.
  • Writing responses to public consultations and rulemaking proposals issued by financial market regulators
  • Working with product development teams to build compliant blockchain-based securities products.
  • Advocating for clear, fair, and innovation friendly policy positions with market regulators and industry bodies globally.
  • Representing Coinbase in industry forums, regulatory discussions, and public speaking engagements.

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • JD or equivalent law degree with strong academic credentials.
  • 10+  years of experience in securities law at a law firm, market regulator, or in-house at a financial institution or fintech company.
  • Deep knowledge of securities laws, including the U.S. Securities Act, Securities Exchange Act, and global equivalents (e.g., MiFID, IOSCO guidelines).
  • Familiarity with digital asset infrastructure, trading platforms, and custody solutions.
  • Experience responding to regulatory consultations, or equivalent experience from the government side.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional teams of subject matter experts
  • Ability to produce superbly written work for internal and external consumption, and efficiently brief senior level audiences on the content.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience working at the SEC, FINRA, or equivalent international market regulator.
