POSITION:       Latin America & the Caribbean Editor

LOCATION:      Remote

STATUS:          Full-time

OVERVIEW:

The China-Global South Project (CGSP) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit digital media initiative dedicated to exploring every facet of China’s engagement in the Americas and throughout the Global South. CGSP produces daily and weekly editorial content distributed across multiple channels to a wide cross-section of high-level international stakeholders focused on the detailed mapping of Chinese global expansion and engagement. This readership includes policymakers, diplomats, journalists, scholars, and students. CGSP currently has staff in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

ROLE:

The China-Global South Project seeks an experienced Latin America & the Caribbean (LAC) Editor to join its growing team. The ideal person for this role is a native Spanish speaker with a proven track record in journalism or other editorial content creation. Candidates with backgrounds at think tanks, risk consultancies, and non-governmental organizations will also be considered for this role. Previous knowledge about Chinese engagement in LAC is also very important.

The LAC Editor will also commission multimedia content from creators throughout the region and work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to develop compelling, engaging material from these contributors.

This position will also work on longer-term feature reporting initiatives, including multimedia and data visualization projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES: This dynamic position requires a mix of skills and provides many opportunities for growth and development. Responsibilities include:

  • Assume full responsibility for maintaining CGSP’s Spanish-language website.
  • Write daily news updates on current events related to Chinese engagement in LAC.
  • Publish third-party content from CGSP contributors and news agencies.
  • Adapt material produced by CGSP’s other outlets for the Spanish-language website.
  • Manage CGSP’s Spanish-language presence on social media, including Twitter, Bluesky, LinkedIn, and Facebook, among others.
  • Serve as an expert commentator in CGSP multimedia productions, including audio podcasts, YouTube shows, and virtual seminars.
  • Commission columns and other research from LAC thought leaders on relevant topics.
  • Coordinate content delivery, payment, and publication schedules for local content creators who contribute to this initiative.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

SKILLS:

  • Fluent in written and spoken Spanish and English.
  • Knowledge about China and Chinese engagement in LAC.
  • Previous journalism experience is required, preferably in an online news organization.
  • Experience with multimedia reporting, including video, social media, and other digital platforms.
  • Experience conducting online research, specifically using social media channels.
  • Ability to work remotely with limited supervision under tight deadlines.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least five years of journalism experience is required.
  • Must have a college degree (all majors welcome, but economics/development/international relations preferred)
  • Must be available to work a standard 40-hour work week.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote office environment with co-workers across several time zones.
  • Excellent Spanish-language writing skills.
  • Strong research, writing, and reporting skills, with the ability to produce accurate, informative, and engaging content on tight deadlines.
  • Must be willing to proactively expand their skill set and quickly immerse themselves in new fields of knowledge and expertise.
  • Occasionally, there may be a need to work outside regular business hours.
