Job Purpose

Longroad Energy is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Compliance Manager to oversee the implementation of environmental development conditions and commitments for our large-scale renewable energy projects across the United States. This role will ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations from construction through operational phases of our wind, solar, and energy storage facilities. The primary focus will involve stormwater compliance, revegetation, weed control, and implementation of wildlife commitments. Traveling to many states in the US where sites are in construction or are operating will be an important part of this position. The Environmental Compliance Manager will work closely with project development, construction, and operations and asset management teams to ensure that our projects not only meet regulatory requirements but also contribute to our commitment to promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible energy solutions.


Responsibilities

1. Implementation and Compliance:

  • Implementation of environmental permit conditions, approvals, mitigation plans, and other commitments for renewable energy projects during construction and operations
  • Review and assess the implementation of environmental management plans (EMPs), such as erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPPs), vegetation management plans (VMPs), spill prevention, control, and countermeasure (SPCC) plans, and waste management plans.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to assess compliance with environmental permits, regulations, and company policies.
  • Develop, and oversee adoption and implementation of compliance matrices through construction and operations milestones. 
  • Proactively identify and recommend solutions for potential environmental risks associated with project construction and operations.
  • Stay current with changes in environmental regulations and industry best practices.


2. Communication and Coordination:

  • Manage relationships with environmental agency staff, consultants, and contractors.
  • Communicate with construction and operations teams regarding compliance assessments.


3. Training and Development:

  • Develop and teach environmental training programs for construction and operations personnel.
  • Development of budgets for on-going or emerging compliance needs.


4. Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Coordinate and oversee environmental monitoring programs, including wildlife surveys, vegetation monitoring, and water quality sampling, and associated reporting. 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all environmental compliance activities, including inspection reports, monitoring data, and correspondence with regulatory agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, biology, ecology, or related field. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental renewable energy field, preferably in development or construction roles.
  • Willingness to travel to Longroad sites two weeks per month, for periods of up to a week; potential to occasionally travel more often in a month as needed.
  • Detailed understanding of federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including NEPA, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
  • Experience with environmental permitting and compliance for large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with developing and implementing EMPs, SWPPPs, SPCC plans, and other environmental management documents.
  • Experience conducting environmental field work, including site assessments, inspections, and monitoring. 
  • Well-versed in the technical aspects of wind and solar energy development, including wildlife and habitat assessments, cultural resource assessments, and other environmental variables.
  • Ability to work constructively with the development, construction, and operations teams to communicate site findings and work towards solutions.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, biology, ecology, or related field.
  • Knowledgeable in site development, erosion and sedimentation control, stormwater management planning, vegetation management, civil engineering concepts and site plan interpretation.
  • Prior experience working with project teams to address permitting issues.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP)) are a plus.
  • Experience with Smartsheet and other project management tools.
