Job Summary

The Underwriting function is dedicated to fostering sound underwriting and business decisions, developing effective relationships, and contributing to the growth and development of the underwriting department. The goal is to offer coverage appropriate to individual risk profiles. Underwriters are expected to progress through the job family levels through one-on-one training and on-the-job exposure, developing their analytical skills, extensive knowledge of medical, health, and financial acumen, independent decision-making, effective communication, and leadership skills.

We are hiring for either an IDI Underwriter or Senior IDI Underwriter. Reporting to the Director of Underwriting, this role will contribute to team responsibilities including risk assessment, customer service, mentoring, and participation in projects. Team members will leverage their medical and financial knowledge to provide solutions and meet stakeholder needs, then utilize strong communication skills to deliver outputs. The team has significant responsibility and interaction with underwriting leadership as well as opportunities for self-directed progress.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Apply sound, creative underwriting and business judgment in the timely analysis and evaluation of insurance risks to contribute to the growth and profitability of the organization.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution, and anticipation of customer expectations.
  • Provide mentoring and training as appropriate based on job level and experience.
  • Actively participate in projects to contribute to corporate goals.

Skills and Background You’ll Need:

Based on existing skills and experience, candidates will be placed into one of two roles that reflect current progress along career track:

  • IDI Underwriter: Generally, 3-5 years of experience in disability insurance underwriting in review of both medical and financial risk or similar analytical capacity.
  • Senior IDI Underwriter: Generally, 6-10 years of progressive experience in disability insurance underwriting complex cases in review of both medical and financial risk or similar analytical capacity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or progressively responsible work experience with an emphasis in Disability Insurance underwriting or a similar analytical capacity.
  • In depth medical and financial knowledge to analyze detailed written information for risk assessment against requested policy plan information.
  • Ability to analyze detailed written information for accuracy and completeness.
  • Clear expression of ideas in both written and oral communications.
  • Strong customer service and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and utilize negotiation skills to achieve desired results.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

*Note: The salary range at the bottom of this posting is for the IDI Underwriter. The range for Senior is $74,500 - $108,750

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

 

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.

Salary Range:

$64,250.00 - $94,000.00
