Job description

This is a remote position.

Position: Optical Manager
$99,375 to $165,625 annually

Job Summary:
The Manager, Optical will lead a team of engineers to deploy, manage and maintain DWDM technology throughout the
Wholesail Network’s footprint.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Essential Duties and Responsibilities listed below are a range of duties performed by the employee and not intended

  • Ensure timely communication, collaboration, and follow-up between teams.
  • Lead continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Provide ongoing mentoring and coaching to Optical engineers.
  • Support team planning and preparation of equipment installation, specifications, and drawings.
  • Work with third party fiber providers where required to successfully turn up DWDM systems.
  • Support inter-team communication with core network engineering team to make sure capacity is provisioned as
    needed to ensure a congestion free and fully protected IP network.
  • Support implementation of DWDM wavelengths and associated muxes to provide OC192 circuits to TDM team.
    DWDM team minimum circuit size is OC192/10g, smaller TDM circuits will be the TDM team.
  • Support optical team to streamline and standardize implementation methods and procedures that allow for scale.
  • Generate quote requests, purchase requests and RFPs.
  • Attend various meetings with management, departments, and vendors to ensure company objectives are met.
  • Participate in inter-departmental planning meetings to coordinate and communicate activities related to the
    successful completion of projects.
  • Work closely with Network Operations personnel to hand-off newly deployed equipment and customer services
    for ongoing surveillance and management.
  • Support the core IP network with the implementation of DWDM wavelengths as needed for capacity.
  • Work with IP to ensure new IP pops are accessible once the DWDM network is in place.
  • Travel to job sites and project sites as required.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for DWDM outages.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the business and evolving organization.

Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of DWDM & optical transport experience required.
  • 2+ years leadership experience.
  • Telecom Network experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of telecommunications design, installation practices and principals required.
  • Experience provisioning or commissioning telecommunications network elements such as routers, switches,
    DSLAMs, PON, TDM, VOIP, DWDM preferred.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical documents such as vendor deployment guidelines, white papers,
    and configuration manuals.
  • Ability to coach and mentor developing leaders and aspiring super stars.
  • Ability to meet and set short term and long-term objectives for self and assigned team.
  • Ability to serve as a collaborative team player within the optical engineering organization.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills are required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels within an organization.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to operate various office equipment such as personal computer, various software programs including
    Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Visio), and telephone systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Ability to work as part of a team while performing as an individual.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends, as well as on call.
  • Ability to drive on behalf of the company in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time in a typical office environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Position requires flexibility to work within non-standard business hours.
  • Ability to travel to project sites and areas in all weather.
  • Ability to perform job from high places (i.e., towers and roofs).
  • Ability to be exposed to dust, dirt, noise, insects, and cleaning solutions.
  • Ability to work in poorly ventilated during extreme heat.
  • Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and the
    ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment and Additional Information:
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer,
keyboard, mouse, and multi-line telephone system. The work is primarily a modern office setting.
