Job description

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a Principal Engineer to take a leading role in shaping the future of our healthcare API platform. As a Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for setting the technical direction, influencing architecture decisions, and ensuring our APIs are scalable, secure, and compliant with healthcare standards like HL7 FHIR and SMART.

What You’ll Be Doing As A Part of Our Team

  • Lead the long-term strategy and vision for the API layer, ensuring it supports the company's goals for scalability, performance, and interoperability.
  • Design and develop complex, highly available APIs and systems, with a strong focus on HL7 FHIR services and healthcare data exchange.
  • Work closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to define strategic technical initiatives and drive their implementation.
  • Influence and set technical standards for API design, development, and testing across the organization.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for HL7 FHIR services, ensuring the integration of healthcare standards and the interoperability of our products.
  • Provide guidance to engineering teams, offering technical mentorship and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Lead by example in writing clean, maintainable, and efficient code, and ensure high-quality code through code reviews and mentorship.
  • Contribute to the evolution of engineering processes, promoting best practices and continuous improvement.
  • Engage in external technical communities, staying at the forefront of industry trends and innovations.

What You Should Have To Qualify

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in API development and architecture.
  • Deep expertise in HL7 FHIR services and healthcare data interoperability.
  • Proven experience designing and scaling large, mission-critical APIs and services.
  • Strong leadership abilities, with experience guiding and influencing technical direction at an organizational level.
  • Expert-level proficiency in languages like Java, Python, or Node.js.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and microservices architectures.
  • Strong understanding of API security, performance optimization, and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Ideally, You Would Also Have These

  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare standards (HL7 FHIR, SMART, CDA, CCD, etc).
  • Familiarity with regulatory healthcare IT requirements (HIPAA, 21CC, etc).
  • Advanced experience with API security practices and tools (OAuth, OpenID).
  • Familiarity with API gateway technologies and service mesh architectures.
  • Experience with distributed systems and high-availability architectures.
