Data Scientists at Whatnot bring technical expertise, analytical mindset and strong communication skills to solve problems and identify opportunities critical to the growth of Whatnot.They are active in the decision making process to align on business goals, analyze our data using appropriate techniques, identify opportunities and proactively communicate them across the organization. This role is part of the day-to-day and strategic future of the organization and you will play an active role in the decisions and direction of the domains you support.

You will:

  • Define and own the KPIs that measure your domain of focus, which is prioritized based on a mixture of business need, personal experience and skill set
  • Analyze business trends and key metrics to create actionable insights that drive growth, improve the experience of our community and enhance profitability.
  • Partner closely across the business to find improvements/opportunities and influence decisions using data science methodologies and tools.
  • Use our modern data stack to build data products and create production-quality dashboards to convey insights.
  • Be active and embedded with cross-functional teams and partners. Listen to their issues, work as peers to identify the right problems and best solutions, and make data and analytics accessible to them.
  • Define and advance the best practices for analytics, especially in your domain, to maximize user adoption and team effectiveness.
  • Leverage experimentation, causal inference, and other statistical techniques to analyze problems in a complex ecosystem and forecast future needs of the company.
  • Maintain existing measures and dashboards while bringing a continuous improvement approach to regularly evaluate the tools, methods and metrics we use in our analysis. 
  • Inform the engineering, operations, and machine learning roadmaps through analysis of marketplace, user behavior, and product trends.

Team members in this role are required to be within commuting distance of our San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, or New York City hub.

👋 You

We are looking for intellectually curious, highly motivated individuals to be foundational members of our Data team! You will partner with our Engineering, Product, and Operations teams to systematically detect, measure, and action against fraud and other threats to Whatnot’s platform.

You should have strong critical thinking and analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a knack for working across teams in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate must be adept in navigating the data stack and able to support initiatives in all facets from analytics/data engineering and product analytics to machine learning, ideally with previous experience in a role working directly with cross-functional stakeholders.

In addition to 3+ years of experience in the Data field, you should have:

  • Excellent verbal and writing communications, including the ability to clearly and concisely articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical collaborators
  • Firm grasp of visualization tools, interactive and self-serving, such as business intelligence and notebooks
  • Technical experience with proven ability to apply scientific methods to solve real-world problems on large scale data.
  • Experience working in any combination of the following: fast growing start up, marketplaces, e-commerce, modern tech company that rapidly ingests large volumes of data and uses for operational and analytical purposes
  • Ability to lead work in diverse business domains and communicate findings with leadership and product teams
  • Comfortability with data warehouses and big data technologies such as Snowflake, Big Query, Red Shift, Spark, DBT
  • Expert in using SQL for data analysis, reporting, and dashboarding
  • Experience with a scripting language such as Python or R 
  • Aptitude and experience in applied statistical modeling and machine learning techniques
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. 
💰Compensation

For US-based applicants: $158,000 - $205,000/year + benefits + restricted stock units

The salary range may be inclusive of several levels that would be applicable to the position. Final salary will be based on a number of factors including, level, relevant prior experience, skills and expertise. This range is only inclusive of base salary, not benefits (more details below) or equity in the form of stock options.
