The Senior Data Scientist serves as a lead technical expert for analytics requests, leveraging multi-disciplinary expertise in mathematics & statistics, finance, computer science, and machine learning to solve complex problems beyond the scope of a typical analytics specialist. This role, with direction from management, leads high-value initiatives and provides strategic insights across the organization.
The analyses coming from this role will directly impact critical business areas, including creating models to optimize trading strategies and achieve aggressive performance targets and delivering insights used by senior leadership, trading, commercial valuations, risk, accounting, strategic planning, retail, and generation teams to enhance decision-making.
Major responsibilities:
Lead and mentor forecast and market analytics specialists, providing guidance in analytical methodologies and best practices.
Deliver high-quality, ad-hoc analyses under tight deadlines to support strategic decision-making.
Demonstrate expertise in analyzing the Alberta electricity and natural gas markets, offering deep insights into market trends and dynamics.
Effectively communicate data-driven strategies to optimize profitability and minimize costs in areas such as trading, regulatory advocacy, market design, and project valuation.
Identify and quantify market and regulatory risks through comprehensive scenario and sensitivity analyses.
Design, develop, and deploy advanced predictive analytics, machine learning, and statistical models to generate critical market and operational insights for both trading teams and executive leadership.
Build scalable and efficient data pipelines using Python (Pandas, NumPy, PySpark), SQL, and cloud-based technologies (Azure, Fabric, Databricks) to support analytical workflows.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, analysts, and energy market specialists, to translate complex business challenges into technical solutions for wholesale market operations.
Provide leadership and accountability in developing and maintaining analytical models of the Alberta electricity and natural gas markets, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
Education required:
Masters in STEM subject with strong math, business, and computer science focus required
CFA and/or MBA or PhD preferred
Qualifications and experience:
Minimum 8 years related industry and technical experience
Programming fluency in Python or R, SQL, and VBA
Experience working with structured and unstructured big data, financial analysis, valuation, derivatives, corporate finance, portfolio optimization
Advanced statistical modelling skills used to help predict future market outcomes
Data science expertise – machine learning, artificial intelligence, supervised and unsupervised, feature selection, statistical inference
This role requires a broad scope of knowledge on the Alberta market, market evolution and energy related contracting
Experience with software development best practices, version control (Git), and CI/CD pipelines
Understanding of relationships/correlations between weather and supply/demand for natural gas and electricity
Comprehensive knowledge of GHG/REC/REM market fundamentals, market design and compliance rules
Expertise in Alberta electricity and natural gas markets including dispatch control, unit bidding behavior generation cost structure and issues affecting these markets including supply and demand drivers
Competencies:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify and convey complex topics to non-technical leaders
Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with strong personality types. Be able to manage conflicting interests, and ever-changing priorities while staying focused
A self-starter who is adaptive and detail oriented as well as tenacious, with an interest in the energy market, a passion for data analytics, and a drive to innovate and grow

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
