Who are we?
Newmedica are one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, providing outpatients appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery. We aim to change lives through better sight and eye health.
We care for thousands of NHS and private patients a year in our specialist eye clinics across the country. We have significant growth plans over the next few years as we look to establish a national footprint and open many new sites across the UK.
We are thrilled to say that following an independently conducted survey of Newmedica colleagues, we have been certified as a Great Place to Work for the second year running. This is a global benchmark that recognises employers who create an outstanding employee experience.
We are looking for an Ophthalmology Specialist Nurse to join our central Support Office team. Working within the Clinical Quality and Patient Safety team, and reporting to the National Theatre Lead, this is a new role to the business and will play a key part in providing advisory support to implement and enhance ophthalmology services across our ophthalmology clinics.
This role is remote based, but regular national travel with overnight stays will be required. We are looking for someone who is based in the South of England.
Role overview
In this role, you'll be the central point of expertise and guidance for our services, supporting local teams in implementing robust clinical pathways and evidence-based practices. Your day-to-day activities will include offering advice on complex clinical queries and issues to ensure high-quality patient care. You'll design, review, and implement standardised clinical pathways across various ophthalmology specialties such as cataract, glaucoma, medical retina, and oculoplastic.
Collaborating with other subject matter experts and our clinical partners, you'll ensure these pathways are efficient, patient-centred, and aligned with regulatory standards.
You'll also develop and deliver training programmes for clinical and non-clinical staff on ophthalmology best practices and emerging trends, providing mentoring and support to local nursing teams.
Leading clinical audit programmes, you'll develop audits to monitor clinical outcomes, assess compliance with clinical governance, infection control, and regulatory requirements. Reporting audit findings to the senior management team with recommendations for improvement will be a key part of your role. Additionally, you'll stay informed on advancements in ophthalmology treatments and technologies, supporting their integration into service provision where appropriate.
What skills and experience do I need?
You will need to be a Registered Nurse with current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Significant experience in ophthalmology, including expertise in various subspecialties such as cataract, glaucoma, medical retina, and oculoplastic, is essential. Familiarity with NHS and independent sector standards for ophthalmology services is important.
You should have proven experience in clinical pathway development, clinical audits, and governance, along with strong training and mentoring skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must, as you'll need to collaborate effectively across teams.
Leadership or advisory experience in a similar role, a qualification in ophthalmology nursing, and project management experience will be highly beneficial. You'll also need to actively promote Newmedica, ensuring quality standards and performance measures are met, and facilitate continuous improvements in all aspects of the role.
Please note we use video interviews as part of our recruitment process. If you are shortlisted, you will be asked to complete a short video interview as the next stage of the process.
