Department Background:

The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty, ~200 undergraduate majors, 200+ graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The school offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.

About New York Agricultural Education Outreach: Housed in the Horticulture Section in the School of Integrative Plant Sciences, Agricultural Education and Outreach has a decades long track record of supporting schools, communities, teachers, students and the agriculture industry in New York State through programs, events, resources, professional development and strategic leadership to advance school-based agricultural education. New York Agricultural Education Outreach encompasses three programs- New York FFA, Teacher Services Professional Development, and New York Agriculture in the Classroom.

Position Summary:

The Agricultural Education Specialist is responsible for providing leadership, overseeing our statewide recruitment efforts, and promoting agricultural education and NY secondary teacher certification pathways. This role will work directly with secondary and post-secondary students, educators, and administrators to promote the advancement of agricultural education within the state and promote agricultural education teaching career opportunities to a wide range of traditional and non-traditional audiences.  

The specialist is part of the New York Agricultural Education Outreach team and will be responsible for educator support, statewide initiatives, and programming support. They will provide initial and ongoing support to new teachers and develop resources for developing agricultural education programs in communities of all backgrounds. This position will spend significant time providing support for NY’s agricultural educator recruitment and retention initiatives as well as handle logistics for conferences and other events as assigned. This Agricultural Education Specialist will serve individuals and school communities with diverse races, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, abilities and more to promote and adapt agricultural education in all schools in our state.

This position is a full-time, remote position with moderate travel required throughout New York State and occasional out-of-state conferences. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination. Ability to work well with a diverse group in a professional and respectful work environment.

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Familiarity with the NYS TEACH System and certification pathways.

  • Strong knowledge of the three-component model of agricultural education and knowledge of FFA programs and priorities.

  • Knowledge and understanding of NYS education system, secondary agricultural education, FFA, and Supervised Agricultural Experiences. 

  • Ability to work well and establish effective working relationships with teachers and administrators (most commonly at the middle and high school level).

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite required (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

  • Experience with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, and Dropbox

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish tasks and navigate competing deadlines and priorities for resources.

  • Experience demonstrating self-motivation, accountability and a service-mindset.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Strong organization, time, detail and project management skills.

  • Experience using judgment, creativity, and problem-solving skills to deliver project-relevant results and represent others.

  • Ability to meet and manage the travel requirements of the position (in-state travel throughout New York with limited out-of-state travel for occasional national events), including having reliable transportation or having and maintaining a valid New York State driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in agriculture, education, or similar field. Seven-to-ten years of experience with teaching or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Agriculture teaching skills and experience at the middle or high school level.

  • Understanding of the NY State Education Department CTE Program Approval Process.

  • Experience with agricultural education and FFA.

  • Experience navigating the NY teacher certification process.

  • Knowledge or working experience with supervised agricultural experiences.

  • Ability to flex formal and informal communication style to multiple cultural environments and audience types including those with diverse races, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities.
