Telstra Consumer is where our Telstra Retail business lives and operates. Telstra Retail is responsible for all of Telstra’s branded stores, as well as our retail sales and service operations.
Our team span from creatives, strategists, production, and subject matter experts who work on some of the most exciting projects our business can offer.

About the role
Our store designers deliver innovative retail store experiences that excite the emotions, connect with our customers, and deliver uplift for Telstra in NPS, sales and overall experience for our team and our customers.
You will be expected to bring a positive, creative and collaborative approach to work with you, where you focus on seeking out and developing creative solutions to compelling and challenging problems facing the business. To be effective you will need to bring a proven ability to work at all three levels of design (architecture, interiors & industrial) to deliver holistic retail store design outcomes as needed either as whole of store design, fixture design, or materials/graphics.
Day to day you will be working with cross-company teams from retail, marketing & brand, product and merchandising as well as our external consulting partners in construction and engineering to deliver important business change projects on behalf of Telstra’s Retail team. Creativity is key, but at Telstra this equally goes alongside a practical approach to balancing this creativity with business acumen, consistent and demonstrated ability to deliver work to a program/schedule and produce design work that is cost effective and consistent with business requirements.
The ideal candidate for this role will be a retail store designer versed and capable in producing high-quality work that supports and creates premium retail projects containing significant IT complexity, and who thrives on working in a highly volatile environment where priorities often change and change quickly. You will also need to have a demonstrated ability and skill leveraging the design tools of trade commonly used in the industry to create retail store environments. Detailed experience working in applications like SketchUp, AutoCAD or Revit is a requirement for applicants, as is a professional qualification in a related discipline (architecture, interior design, industrial design, etc.)
This role is advertised as a fixed-term engagement with Telstra for 12 months. Also, national domestic travel for work is required in this role but is expected to be 2-4 trips per year, for a period of 1-3 days per trip (subject to change).
Key Responsibilities
- Ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously while prioritizing and completing set milestones.
- Strong interest in continuous improvement of systems, processes, cost reduction and sustainability
- High level communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to perform in high-pressure deadline critical situations.
- Able to work individually or in a team.
- Ability to create and deliver excellent quality presentations - especially for design briefings & liaison with store teams and senior managers highlighting ideas, benefits and solutions.
- Proven ability to work at all three levels of design (architecture, interiors & industrial) to deliver holistic retail store design outcomes as needed either as whole of store design, fixture design, or materials/graphics
- Lead and manage small to large scale projects from inception to delivery by applying a range of project management methodologies such as Agile and Waterfall
- Determine and manage project estimates and budgets to make purchasing decisions for project resources including internal and external staffing requirements, tools needed, and vendor services
- Prepare and present regular status reports and analysis on variance data in relation to scope, schedule, and budget for key project stakeholders
- Effectively collaborate and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders to gain buy in from various groups and manage competing priorities.
- Leverage lessons learnt from prior projects and expertise such as global best practices in design to minimise business impacts and influence desired outcomes.
- Apply analytical thinking to investigate ways to improve existing processes and fix pain points through automation, streamlining, and program delivery to meet agreed project outcomes and performance.
About you

- Able to work individually or in a team, and someone who is self-led and capable of working remotely almost all the time.
- Considerable experience as a professional designer of retail environments/experiences.
- The ideal candidate will have experience in construction, especially in retail construction and an understanding of the tools/levers involved
- Professional qualifications in an appropriate field (architecture, industrial design or interior design).
- Proven ability to work in ambiguous, frequently changing environments and yet drive deliverables and create thoughtful, cost-effective design solutions.
- Energetic innovator. Someone hungry to improve the environments and experiences of others by improving workplace processes or introducing new tools and skills to their peers
- Demonstrated experience in influencing stakeholders – internal and external – mostly without formal authority
