We own our jobs proudly - our leaders don't hold our hands, but they're in our corner whenever we ask for help - and our environment is flexible and remote-first.
We’re looking for an experienced DevOps engineer whose role will center on PHP development for WordPress and related integrations. The engineer will focus on Kinsta's PHP-related infrastructural elements such as the Kinsta Must Use Plugin and our application monitoring system (APM). Additional responsibilities include contributing to the overall development of DevOps tools and platforms and ensuring reliability and scalability across our hosting environment.
This role is expected to participate in SysOps day-to-day duties as-needed. The primary goal is to deliver high-quality development solutions while supporting the operational requirements of the platform when necessary.
What You'll Do:
Develop and Maintain PHP Integrations - Take ownership of developing and maintaining PHP-based tools and plugins, with a focus on the Kinsta must-use plugin and other key integrations, such as the internal APM system.
Contribute to Platform Development - Collaborate with the DevOps team to enhance platform tools and infrastructure, focusing on automation, scalability, and system efficiency.
Support Operational Needs as Required - Participate in SysOps responsibilities, providing support during periods of high demand, such as when multiple team members are on PTO or the shift is particularly busy. Assist with monitoring, incident resolution, and other operational tasks as needed.
Ensure Code Quality and Security - Write clean, maintainable, and testable code that meets security and performance best practices. Participate in peer reviews to ensure consistent coding standards and provide constructive feedback to the team.
Collaborate Across Teams - Work closely with SysOps, DevOps, and support teams to align development projects with operational goals. Assist in troubleshooting and resolving issues that cross team boundaries.
Drive Continuous Improvement - Proactively identify opportunities to improve existing tools, workflows, and processes. Contribute ideas and participate in planning sessions to enhance team efficiency and technical capabilities.
What You'll Bring to the role:
3+ years of hands-on Linux experience, ideally with Ubuntu, and the ability to handle SysOps tasks confidently.
3+ years of PHP development experience, with a strong focus on WordPress-specific projects (plugins, themes, or core contributions).
Familiarity with deployment and automation tools—experience with Ansible or similar technologies is a plus.
A proactive, problem-solving mindset and experience troubleshooting performance, scalability, or reliability issues in production environments.
Bonus points:
Direct experience in the WordPress hosting industry or broader web hosting experience.
Contributions to WordPress core, plugins, or themes on GitHub or WordPress.org.
Experience with additional tools in our stack, such as GitHub Actions, Elasticsearch, nginx, Python, Bash, Cloud Functions, or GCP services.
Our Benefits:
Annual remote expense budget.
Flexible PTO.
Paid parental leave.
Annual professional development budget: available after one year with Kinsta.
Sabbatical: available after three years with Kinsta (and every three years thereafter).
