Job description

ROLE SUMMARY

The Diagnostics Solutions Director will be a member of the Pfizer Oncology Customer Solutions Team and will be responsible for working with the Commercial Diagnostics Team to help develop and lead strategies and that enable laboratories to perform optimal testing relative to precision medicine. The Diagnostics Solutions Director will provide functional and technical expertise to help pathology laboratories of all sizes and complexities to overcome barriers and to improve testing technologies (e.g., immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, PCR and NGS). This role focuses on the core therapeutic areas of the Pfizer Oncology BU, namely metastatic breast cancer, prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma, colorectal cancer, patients with hematologic cancers, and melanoma.

The Diagnostics Solutions Director will be able to speak knowledgably about the various technologies in pathology and the regulatory aspects of test performance and validation at Pfizer Key Accounts.

The ideal candidate should be able to travel throughout the United States as needed for customer engagements, professional conferences, and team meetings.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the pathology laboratory functional and technical subject matter expert (SME) for Commercial Diagnostics, Oncology Accounts Group, and broader Pfizer cross-functional partners to help them understand the application of appropriate laboratory testing strategies and deliver targeted outcomes through the use of those technologies (e.g., attend customer meetings, lead best practice forums, proactively engage Oncology Account Managers to discuss barriers and opportunities, etc.)

  • Liaise between and directly within the Pfizer Oncology Accounts Group and customer representatives (i.e., Laboratory Leadership and Laboratory Technologists) in joint commercial/medical opportunities to conduct on-site “current state” assessments of pathology testing and recommend potential solutions to enhance testing.

  • Support the design, validation, implementation, and performance of laboratory tests for Oncology Key Account Customers.

  • Applies advanced wide-ranging experience and professional knowledge to provide solutions in creative and effective ways.

  • Directs the application of existing testing principles and guides development of new testing technologies, policies and ideas. Understands the interrelationships of different disciplines in pathology.

  • Works on complex assignments where problem solving requires in-depth evaluation of varying factors and practices/procedures must be determined.

  • Enhances internal and external working relationships and networks with key contacts outside area of expertise.

  • Adapts style to differing audiences and frequently advises others on complex testing matters that relate to the wider business and require persuasion.

  • May train and mentor junior level staff.

  • Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

  • Educates pathologists on new therapy driven emerging biomarkers of interest and utility of said biomarkers (pre and post approval)

  • Actively monitor the latest developments within the therapeutic area and be able to effectively discuss all aspects of the patient biopsy, tissue journey, and the technical challenges along the tumor and patient diagnosis.

  • Experience working with and training pathologists on new emerging data and information concerning accurate Pathology testing and reporting.

  • Must have experience presenting and articulating educational and complex information to key stakeholders / decision makers, including but not limited to pathologists, oncologists, lab techs, c-suite executives, etc.

  • A basic understanding of hospital EMRs flow of work and Laboratory LIS preferred.

  • 50% to 70% travel (e.g., customer engagements, professional symposiums and internal meetings).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires a minimum of 8 years of related laboratory experience with a bachelor’s degree.

  • An in-depth knowledge of the laboratory diagnostics and the diagnostics marketplace.

  • Significant experience in the functional and technical application of laboratory technologies: Immunohistochemistry, Flow Cytometry, FISH, PCR, and NGS.

  • An understanding of the clinical care continuum in oncology; especially between medical oncology and hematology with the laboratory.

  • An understanding of the pathology laboratory IT landscape including inter-relationships of the players within the space – vendors, third-party data sources, etc.

  • Hands-on experience with laboratory test validation and implementation.

  • An understanding of laboratory guidelines and regulations.

  • Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills are necessary to manage diverse needs, meet deadlines and monitor and evaluate results.

  • Excellent presentation skills required.

  • Candidate must have a clean driving record.

  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6 years of related experience and a master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years of experience

  • ASCP certification as a technologist

  • PMP certification (or equivalent)

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Diagnostics Solutions Director will regularly interact with the Field Medical Outcomes and Analytics team, Oncology Key Account Directors and National Account Managers, Brand Marketing, Pfizer Medical and Pfizer Legal
