Lead Mechanical Engineer
The Opportunity:
Do you want to lead part of the team developing the next generation of world leading Counter UAS (Un-crewed Air Systems) and Acoustic Location Products?
As a Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for the technical delivery of mechanical solutions over a number of programmes within the Land Domain, working on Product and System solutions.
Leonardo offers a mixture of on-site and remote working; with attendance at our Essex facility in line with Programme requirements.
In this senior technical role you will report directly to Engineering Managers and the Head of Mechanical Engineering.
The role offers the opportunity for ad hoc UK and overseas travel where you will engage with Customers, End-Users and sub-contractors.
The successful candidate will play an active role in mentoring and developing less experienced Engineer’s within the Team (from Principal to Early Careers Engineers and Technicians as well as mechanical factors to cross-displine engineers and project team).
Applicants must be eligible to meet full UK Security Clearance and ITAR classification requirements.
What you’ll do as a Lead Mechanical Engineer:
- Lead the Mission Systems Team in the delivery of Mechanical technical solutions on critical business programmes to ensure mechanical engineering excellence.
- Actively manage Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule and Cost.
- Responsible for Mechanical Engineering solutions through the entire Engineering Lifecycle, ensuring that the solutions consider all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, testability, sustainability, etc.
- Approval and ownership of Mechanical solutions for harsh environments (Shock, Vibration, EMC, RADHAZ, salt fog, etc)
- Ensuring quality and consistency of detailed design, including numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.
- Lead successful resolution of technical problem investigations.
- Approval of Platform Integration Plan(s).
- Involvement in Platform Surveys and Equipment integration/trials.
- Support the development of Mechanical Engineers with the Mission Systems Team.
- Chair reviews of Mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.
- Contribute to Functional Processes and Best Practices.
What we need from you:
Essential Skills, Qualification and Experience:
- A minimum of an upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or Equivalent experience in the field of Defence and/or a highly regulated industry.
- Leading a Team of Mechanical Engineer’s across multiple Programmes
- Mechanical engineering for Electronic products (including RF).
- Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
- Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
- Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data, to inform design decisions.
- Experienced in various aspects of DfX, including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration and Sustainability.
- Leading technical reviews of Mechanical solutions (in-house and sub-contracted).
Desirable:
- MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
- Understanding of CONOPS to aid Requirements Management and technical solutions.
- Integration of equipment onto Military vehicles and Command posts, including 19” rack cabinets, cable management, HFI, etc.
- Solutions involving sheet metal and tube (bend and weld) fabrication.
- Experience using AutoDesk Inventor.
- Capable of producing ‘first pass’ (structural and thermal) analyses to determine if a design is fit-for-purpose i.e. using PTC Simulate, flow or similar.
- Experience using visualisation software i.e. Visionary Render, PTC Mock-up, etc.
- Understanding of Model Based Design (i.e. MATLAB, Simulink, etc)
- Mechanical Engineering industry trends - knowledge of new and advancing tools, techniques and technologies.
