Job Summary:

The Regional Compliance and Privacy Officer is responsible for overseeing and ensuring that Wellstar Health System’s assigned hospitals and medical group practices’ operations adhere to relevant healthcare privacy laws (like HIPAA) and regulatory compliance standards, including monitoring for potential violations, conducting investigations, implementing corrective actions, and providing training to staff across the organization to maintain patient data security and privacy across all systems and practices; essentially acting as the primary guardian of patient information within the Wellstar network. 

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Compliance Oversight:
    • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive compliance program to address all relevant healthcare regulations, including HIPAA, and state privacy laws. 
    • Regularly conduct risk assessments to identify potential compliance vulnerabilities and prioritize mitigation strategies. 
    • Monitor compliance activities across assigned Wellstar facilities and departments through audits, reviews, and data analysis. 
  • Privacy Protection:
    • Investigate and address patient privacy complaints or concerns promptly and effectively. 
    • Provide training to staff on HIPAA regulations and proper handling of patient data. 
  • Incident Management:
    • Respond to suspected or confirmed data breaches, including conducting thorough investigations, notifying affected individuals, and implementing corrective measures.  
  • Policy Development and Communication:
    • Assist in updating compliance policies and procedures to reflect changes in regulations and best practices. 
    • Communicate compliance expectations and guidelines to all levels of staff through training programs and regular updates. 
  • Collaboration and Reporting:
    • Work closely with human resources, legal counsel, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to address compliance concerns. 
    • Regularly report compliance metrics and key findings to senior leadership.
