Job description

Oversee the preparation of rating for prospective and existing business.  Provide leadership and direction to underwriting staff. Provide support to corporate projects as requested, in support of strategic goals.

Directly oversee the development and issuance of rating factors and policies for the achievement of underwriting profitability to support the overall financial stability of the Vision Care line of business

Act as primary contact for Sales Management to develop financially sound quotations regarding new and existing business; develop and/or review analysis used to determine base factors rating; explain basis for premium rates calculated and factors used

Responsible for oversight, review, and approval of sales discount requests ensuring success of financial KPI’s

Oversee research, analyses, and reporting of fluctuations in membership, utilization and business results to identify trends and research variances.  Make recommendations to improve company performance and resolve issues

Research, develop, and write underwriting policies and procedures; interpret and communicate established department policies

Applies advanced mathematical and statistical concepts and theories to analyze and collect data and construct solutions to business problems. Oversee research, analyses, and reporting of utilization between products, geographies, and any other strategic segmentation to advise management on potential areas of impact.  Make recommendations for strategic direction

Utilizes understanding of health plan contracts, supplemental offerings, and reimbursement levels to determine the extent to which insurance plans cover medical vision care procedures and treatments

Work with the Product team in developing new and innovative products and offerings that will aid in the attainment of the company’s profitability targets

Collaborate on planning and implementing changes in underwriting systems and processes ensuring business continuity through technological process improvement

Assign, distribute, and monitor work of Underwriting personnel to ensure responsibility is at the appropriate level and team members’ skills are developed to support Underwriting business needs

Monitor unit expenses to ensure unit costs are within budgeted levels

Develop, maintain, and monitor unit standards, processes and procedures to ensure efficient, accurate and measurable Underwriting procedures

Develop & coordinate tools & training to ensure all Underwriting staff receives appropriate information/instruction

Engage in client-facing communications regarding underwriting methodologies and rates

Job Specifications

Typically has the following skills or abilities:

Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience; Minimum of 1 additional year of experience related to functional area

Minimum of 3 years of management experience with responsibilities for hiring, training, assigning work and managing performance of direct reports

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Proficient with spreadsheet and PC-based applications

Proven leadership and negotiating skills

Compensation range for the role is listed below. Applicable salary ranges may differ across markets. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. Salary Ranges: $94,500.00 - $152,250.00
