In this highly visible role, you will manage a portfolio of Farm Bureau® clients and will lead (or own) the catastrophe modeling efforts and projects to support their reinsurance needs and catastrophe management strategy. The Senior Catastrophe Modeler owns many processes related to understanding risk that best inform our stakeholders of the analytical capabilities within the modeling and actuarial space.  Reporting to the Catastrophe Modeling Manager, the Senior Catastrophe Modeler will perform a full range of catastrophe modeling activities for the Farm Bureau® companies and may supervise assigned team members.

Specifically, the Senior Catastrophe Modeler is responsible for:

  • Leading catastrophe modeling efforts; scrubbing data in both structured and unstructured formats, data reconciliation, running catastrophe models, completing ad-hoc analyses as requested directly by clients or members of the actuarial team, peer review of modeling results, and interpreting and presenting results to Farm Bureau® clients
  • Independently handling the communication, timeline, workload distribution, and completion of Verisk (AIR Worldwide) and RMS catastrophe modeling for reinsurance submissions
  • Managing ad hoc modeling projects and requests from inception through completion based on the goals of Farm Bureau® companies
  • Responding directly to questions about data preparation, models, modeled results, and current catastrophe events
  • Working directly with Farm Bureau® clients and model vendors to guide stakeholders through catastrophe model change management, as well as internal software transitions to the Cloud
  • Heavily contributing to modeling aspects and reviewing of corporate roll-up, gaining insight into AmericanAg®’s catastrophe risk
  • Attending catastrophe modeling conferences and online webinars to stay up to date on all new items within the catastrophe modeling space that may impact AmericanAg® and our Farm Bureau® clients
  • Presenting at AmericanAg® and Farm Bureau® conferences regarding topics related to catastrophe modeling, data work, and new information within the field of catastrophe analytics
  • Potentially supervising one or more analysts on the Cat Modeling team

What is needed for this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Five or more years modeling experience with RMS RiskLink/RiskModeler and Verisk Touchstone models for various use cases, including portfolio analytics, ratemaking, allocation, model change management, or marginal impact projects
  • Extensive experience working with primary insurance datasets
  • Experience presenting technical and complex topics to brokers and clients
  • Strong MS Office Suite skills, particularly with Excel, and the ability to write Microsoft SQL fluently
  • Knowledge of insurance, insurance coverage, and insurance contracts (Actuarial Exams, ARe, CPCU credentials a plus)
  • Working understanding of reinsurance and reinsurance contracts
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills through direct client interaction via meetings, written and verbal correspondence
  • Organizational skills and the ability to work independently, lead, and manage
