Expert Structural Engineer - Product Evolution (all genders)

About the role

We are looking for you –  An experienced Structural Engineer who has focused on the design of timber buildings in international markets but with a focus on the German (or German speaking) market who wishes to join our Product Evolution team. The Product Evolution team is a multi-disciplinary design-focused unit tasked with developing the next generation of Sustainable Prefabricated Buildings designed for Rapid Automated Manufacture and Assembly.  

You will be working alongside other highly experienced Architects, MEP Engineers and timber design specialists. You will be capable and happy to work independently and as part of a close-knit team developing new product designs working alongside the Product Development teams, Research and Development Teams and the Digital Factory design teams. You will be a guiding light for driving forward new conceptual designs for entire buildings and components of building systems. The designs you produce are intended to be (when necessary) unique and novel and as such you will be advising the members of our Prototype Manufacturing Center who will build and test your visions. 

We are looking for a German speaking colleague with a wide ranging and deep understanding of German technical regulations relating to timber structural design (specifically Mid-rise mixed -use building typologies) to help us develop our current multi-family housing product lines conscious that in the future we intend to pivot to other building typologies and other marketplaces beyond Germany and the DACH region. As such the range of building typologies you are asked to work upon will be increasingly diverse to match the ambition of the company as its fields of influence grow and expand.  

We are involved in advising potential Development partners through our in-house Sales and Development team as to how to apply our Building System solution consulting with developers and clients. You will be called upon to bring your structural engineering know-how to bare and advise these teams accordingly. You will be made aware of the market requirements and trends that demand extension of our Building Systems capabilities/range and proactively brings these idea to fruition/reality through you work within the Evolution team.

In this role, you will: 

• be involved in the design of Timber Residential and Multi-Use Buildings
• design appropriate and novel solutions for Buildings and Building Components and oversee their prototyping and testing.
• work alongside a diverse range of construction professionals, industrial designers, product designers, software developers, procurement and costing specialists and a host of other specialisms.
• use your skills of interdisciplinary cooperation to interface widely within the company and with external parties from the construction industry and project development world.
• be focused on the evolution of new product lines but amenable to outward facing roles such as presenting the companies work and vision to external parties and institutions. 

About you 

• Completed University studies (Bachelors, Masters, PHD etc.)  and have at least 10 years of experience post-graduation in a leading Architectural/Engineering practice or Timber Manufacturing or Construction Company
• Portfolio of experience in the design of timber buildings in the DACH region
• While not necessary for the role it would be unusual if you do not hold a professional accreditation through a recognized Engineering Institution. Being a member of one or more Baukammer licensed to act as an Structural Engineer or accredited as a Checking Engineer (Prufstatiker) in the DACH region is considered a bonus.  
• Working and up-to-date knowledge of relevant standards such as the Eurocode, DIN, Muster-Holzbaurichtlinie (MHolzBauRL) , Landesbauordnung (LBO) etc. While not necessary for the role experience in codes outside Germany but in the DACH region e.g. ÖNorm, SIA or further afield such as American or UK systems ASCE, AWC, IBC, SDPWS, BS EN, TD UK etc. would be seen as a bonus.
• While not necessary for the role experience in procedures and standards for Product Development in Germany e.g. the attainment of Allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassung (abZ)/ Allgemeine Bauartgenehmigung (aBG), European Technical Assessment (ETA) would be seen as very beneficial.
• While not necessary for the role the existence of working relationships with staff at any of TU Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Braunschweig, Rosenheim, TU Vienna, ETH Zurich, TU Berlin or similar centers of excellence in Timber/Engineering would be seen as beneficial.
• Very good written and oral communication skills in both German and English
• While GROPYUS hosts considerable drafting and modelling capabilities individual expertise in drafting/modelling tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, Inventor, Sketchup) or other methods of graphical communication/sketching would be considered beneficial.
• Experience in using the Microsoft Office Suite
