General Summary:
The IT Business Architect works closely with stakeholders to support business planning, solution design, and Scrum team collaboration, ensuring smooth handoffs. They partner with the architecture group on estimation, project sizing, and providing business guidance while gathering and refining requirements.

This role spans multiple workstreams, requiring a strong understanding of broader business domains from an architectural perspective.

Responsibilities include collaborating with Architects, Business Architects, strategy consultants, and business partners to develop capability roadmaps for specific domains. The IT Business Architect will lead efforts to prioritize and execute initiatives in alignment with the organization’s long-term business strategy.

They are accountable for translating strategic components into tactical delivery. This includes creating business cases, collaborating with agile teams, and overseeing deliverables. Additionally, they will contribute innovative ideas to enhance the company’s strategic roadmap, leveraging their domain expertise and understanding of evolving business needs.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; relevant professional qualifications or equivalent industry experience accepted.
  • 6+ years of demonstrated Business Analysis and Business Architecture experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate business strategy into actionable capability roadmaps.
  • Proven leadership skills and a strong team player capable of collaborating across diverse teams.
  • Skilled in negotiation and collaboration with both Technology and Business stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity and driving it to tangible outcomes.
  • Insurance industry domain knowledge is strongly preferred.
  • Previous Business Architecture experience is preferred.
  • Proven success in delivering business value through software solutions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of leave of absence and disability workstreams.
  • Metrics-driven mindset with a focus on ensuring ROI for business initiatives.
  • Relevant certifications are strongly encouraged.
  • Understanding of employee experience portals.
  • FINEOS experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain an annual or bi-annual capability roadmap for the domain, prioritizing high-impact business deliverables.
  • Ensure the realization of capabilities as features on product backlogs.
  • Collaborate with business leaders, IT leadership, Chief Product Owners, and Product Owners to ensure capabilities are prioritized for optimal return on investment.
  • Work with architects to develop innovative and sustainable digital business capabilities; may contribute to defining external partnerships or agreements.
  • Participate in tool, technology, and service selection, risk assessments, and sunsetting efforts, ensuring alignment with business needs and architectural sustainability.
  • Lead discussions with Business Analysts, Product Owners, and Agile team leaders to align priorities and translate strategic themes into tangible backlog items.
  • Advocate for a strong customer experience across all deliverables.
  • Coach and mentor Senior Business Analysts and Business Analysts, promoting consistent, high-quality artifacts and business analysis practices.
  • Develop and present business cases for high-level initiatives to secure approval, funding, and prioritization.
  • Drive business strategy for the domain through analysis, ensuring feature definitions align with short- and mid-term roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with Test Engineers to define and articulate capability acceptance criteria.
  • Facilitate cross-team alignment of priorities and short-term objectives.
  • Contribute to business architecture deliverables to ensure clarity and alignment with strategic direction.
  • Optimize user experiences across multiple business applications, including cloud and third-party solutions.
  • May serve as a Scrum Master for an Agile team.
  • Maintain technical familiarity, including knowledge of databases, SQL (queries and data profiling), Rally, and Excel (data manipulation).
  • Comfortable discussing lookups, data relationships, and failure points.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$109,100.00-$224,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.  All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
