UX/UI Designer
Salary: Up to £55,000 per annum depending on experience, plus company benefits
Contract: Permanent, full time
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Shifts: Monday through Friday, flexible between the hours of 8:30am – 6:00pm
Break details: 1-hour lunch, unpaid
Work model: Remote (must be able to attend client sites in Central London and Norwich when required)

We are seeking an experienced UX/UI Designer to take ownership of crafting exceptional user experiences across our digital platforms. The ideal candidate will apply User-Centred Design (UCD) practices and align with Government Digital Service (GDS) principles where appropriate, ensuring the needs and expectations of clients and stakeholders are not only met but exceeded.

Purpose of this Role:
Our UX/UI Designer will be responsible for crafting seamless and engaging user experiences across our digital platforms. You will own the design process end-to-end, from conducting user research and synthesising insights to creating interactive prototypes and final designs.
You will work collaboratively with service design, research, and technical teams to deliver solutions that are user-centred, accessible, and aligned with business objectives. This role demands a strong ability to balance stakeholder requirements with the needs of our users and drive projects to successful completion.
Key Responsibilities
User Research & Insights
- Conduct user research using qualitative and quantitative methods, such as interviews, surveys, usability testing, and data analysis, to uncover user behaviours, needs, and pain points
- Synthesise research findings into actionable insights to inform design decisions
- Support the development of user personas, journey maps, and other artefacts to communicate insights effectively to stakeholders
Experience Design (UX)
- Translate user insights into effective, data-driven design solutions that enhance the overall experience
- Create lo- and high-fidelity wireframes, prototypes, and workflows to visualise user journeys and interactions
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define user and business requirements, balancing both effectively
- Test and iterate on designs based on usability testing and feedback, ensuring continuous improvement
Interface Design (UI)
- Design intuitive, accessible, and visually engaging interfaces that adhere to brand guidelines and align with the Government Digital Service (GDS) standards where required
- Ensure designs are responsive, user-friendly, and optimised for a variety of devices, including mobile and web platforms
- Provide detailed design specifications and artefacts for developers and collaborate during implementation to ensure fidelity to the design vision
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, developers, and researchers, to deliver cohesive solutions
- Present design concepts and rationales to stakeholders at all levels, ensuring alignment and buy-in
- Advocate for user-centred design principles across the organisation and promote best practices
Delivery and Project Leadership
- Lead design efforts across multiple projects, driving progress and ensuring deadlines are met
- Balance project goals, timelines, and resource constraints while maintaining the highest design quality
- Support the development of roadmaps and strategic plans for design-related initiatives
Accessibility and Standards
- Ensure all designs meet the latest WCAG accessibility standards and are inclusive for all users.
- Maintain and contribute to the development and maintenance of design systems, style guides, and UI pattern libraries, ensuring consistency and efficiency across all digital products while adhering to accessibility and usability standards
Qualifications and Skills
Essential
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- 5+ years of experience as a UX/UI Designer with a proven track record of delivering impactful digital products, preferably for public sector or regulatory clients or in a public sector or professional services environment.
- Strong understanding of user-centred design (UCD) principles, design thinking, and data-driven design
- Expertise in conducting user research and usability testing, with the ability to translate findings into actionable insights
- Proficiency in design tools such as Axure, Figma, Sketch, or similar.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working closely with cross-functional teams
- Strong knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG) and inclusive design practices
- Familiarity with GDS frameworks and the Technology Code of Practice
Desirable
- Experience working in Agile environments and collaborating with product teams
- Knowledge of front-end development principles (HTML, CSS) to facilitate effective collaboration with developers
