JOB SUMMARY:

The Director, Field Medical Affairs (US-West) is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction to a team of US based MSLs to achieve BioCryst corporate goals and objectives. Together with the US Medical Affairs Leadership Team, the Director, Field Medical Affairs will establish the long‐term vision, strategy, plans, objectives, and infrastructure for the MSL team. This position also oversees the cultivation of current and future thought leaders in academic and clinical medicine at the local, regional, and national levels in the field of rare diseases. #LI-Remote


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for overall day to day operational aspects of the MSL regional team including hiring, onboarding and reviewing the performance of MSLs, and managing the MSL budget
• Implement and oversee field strategy and priorities in alignment with overall the Medical Affairs plan
• Oversee the development and implementation of Scientific Engagement Plans by Field Medical Advisors, ensuring these plans are effectively aligned to US Medical Affairs Strategy and support the company's strategic goals.
• Assist in the development and execution of MSL onboarding and training curriculum and materials
• Manage and track key performance indicators (KPIs) and provide reports of MSL activities to senior leadership
• Collaborate with US Strategic Lead on strategic discovery, reporting and development of actionable insights.
• Ensure internal stakeholders are knowledgeable of key opinion leader views and opinions as it pertains to BioCryst’s products and relevant disease states
• Build and lead the US Medical Science Liaison capability for BioCryst
• Together with VP, Medical Affairs, develop, and drive implementation of the Global Medical Affairs strategy related primarily to Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) engagement, scientific exchange, medical education and data dissemination.
• Work closely with the rest of Medical organization on variety of activities related but not limited to scientific education, advisory boards, clinical operations, publications, congresses and other activities of interest
• Facilitate and support Medical Congress strategy and lead field medical team at scientific meetings including staffing medical affairs booths, gathering competitive intelligence, and developing pre- and post‐conference scientific and training materials
• Foster research relationships with academic and community KOLs, patient organizations and advocacy groups
• Develop and maintain credible, scientific relationships with academic and medical thought leaders
• Ensure MSLs are fully trained on company SOP’s and fully use internal systems to properly document interactions with Healthcare Professionals, e.g. ensure compliance with Sunshine Act
• All other duties as assigned

 

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

• Advanced scientific or clinical degree (PharmD, PhD, MD), required
• 10+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
• 5+ years of Medical Affairs experience, with significant focus on field medical activities
• A minimum of 3 years of experience managing field-based medical affairs employees in pharmaceuticals preferred
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and exceptional interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated skills in leading and mentoring others
• Good judgment, ability to adapt and change in a shifting environment
• A strategic, passionate, self-starter who takes initiative
• Ability to work independently and function effectively as a team member
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Valid driver's license and the ability to travel as necessary.
• Travel expected up to 40%. Weekend travel may be required.
