Job description

Full Time - Exempt

Role: Under the supervision of the Vice President of Accounting, leads the daily operations of the Accounting Department. Implements established plans, goals, and objectives. Prepares financial reports, including annual plan and operating budgets. Ensures complete, accurate, and timely completion of financial and accounting records for the Credit Union. Directly supervises and coordinates the activities of the Accounting Specialists.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work from home schedule, as set and approved by the positions manager in accordance with the credit union's Remote Work policy.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • 40% - Oversees the daily operations of the department. Assists staff with problems and allocates staff resources as needed. Makes suggestions to improve operations and procedures. Implements changes in operations, policies, and procedures as directed. Understands duties and functions of direct reports.
  • 25% - Assists in development of financial, statistical, and accounting records of the Credit Union. Ensures accounting functions are completed in accordance with established Credit Union procedures and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and any other applicable regulations. Analyzes financials and provides support for Asset-Liability Management (ALM).
  • 10% - Assists with the annual budget and long-range forecast.
  • 10% - Works with auditors/examiners on audits, including year-end comprehensive audit.
  • 10% - Hires, reviews, schedules, trains, directs, and monitors the work of direct reports.
  • 5% - Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Performance Measurements:

  1. Responsible for interviewing, selecting, training, motivating, coaching, scheduling, coordinating, and evaluating direct reports and department staff to ensure quality of work and excellent service to internal and external members. Complete employee performance appraisals and address performance issues and concerns in an appropriate and timely manner. Foster a collaborative and high-performance team environment.
  2. Develop, implement, evaluate and maintain accounting systems, policies, and procedures for the credit union. Ensure the accounting records of the credit union are in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations and follow sound financial principles. Ensures effective internal controls and proper separation of duties are maintained.
  3. Oversee and manage the daily activities of the accounting department including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger postings, bank reconciliations, all CUSO loan postings and preparation of reports associated with the accounting department.
  4. Ensure the Credit Union's books and general ledger accounts are always in balance and current, and ensure timely payment of bills, maintaining supporting documentation.
  5. Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements. Conduct variance analysis and provide insights on financial performance. Ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory reporting requirements.
  6. Assist with the preparation of long-range, annual forecasts, budgets and periodic analysis of variances.
  7. Administer and maintain profitability software program. Provide and review profitability reports with the leadership team and key credit union staff. Make recommendations to improve profitability as needed.
  8. Assist with examinations from CPA firms, NCUA, and other regulatory agencies as needed.
  9. Review and make recommendations based on historical, current, and projected financials, operating, investment, and other environmental trends specific to the economy, the market, and the credit union.
  10. Conducts in depth analysis and reporting on credit union loans, investments, and deposits. Provide financial analysis of other credit union operations on a requested case by case basis. This includes researching and interpreting data, recommendations, and monitoring of assignments.
  11. Identify and implement process improvements to increase operational efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting department. Analyze workflows and recommend changes to optimize resource utilization. Continuously seek opportunities for cost-saving and performance-enhancing initiatives.
  12. Ensure the department meets all deadlines with respect to settlement activities, with minimal errors and with no errors that result in losses to the Credit Union.
  13. Ensure all assigned reports and projects are prepared and completed in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
  14. Keep management informed regarding key operating issues affecting the department and the credit union.
  15. Communicate effectively with management in a timely and appropriate manner. Serve as a liaison between staff and management for accounting related concerns and issues.
    Provide informed, professional, and accurate service and support to all members and associates.
  16. Becomes familiar with and abides by all policies, procedures and guidelines set forth by the credit union, e.g. Security; Bank Secrecy Act; Identity Theft and Red Flags; Cash Over/Short Guidelines; Check Cashing and Holds; Confidentiality; etc.
  17. Participate in training and professional development activities to acquire and maintain standards established by the credit union. This could include attending conferences, seminars and workshops as directed by management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Education - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA or CMA certification preferred.

Experience - Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Experience in a credit union or financial institution is highly desirable.

Interpersonal Skills - Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for the purpose of first-level conflict resolution, building relationships, and soliciting cooperation. Discussions involve a higher degree of confidentiality and discretion, requiring diplomacy and tact in communication.

Other Skills - Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting. Requires current knowledge of accounting related technology regarding hardware and software applications. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required, especially Excel. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Strong leadership and team management abilities. Demonstrates carefulness about detail and thoroughness in completing work tasks. Intermediate mathematical skills are required (calculations and concepts that involve decimals, percentages, fractions, etc.).

Physical Requirements - Involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required occasionally. Repetitive finger movements to perform typing or otherwise working with paper files and documents. Require close visual acuity to prepare and analyze date and figures; view a computer terminal; read; and assess work quality.

Work Environment -  Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. State of Pennsylvania residency required. Position is eligible for a hybrid work from home schedule, as set and approved by the positions manager in accordance with the credit union's Remote Work policy. In order to be approved to work from home, a cable modem or fiber internet connection is required which must have minimum service speed of 10M download / 2M upload, with less than 1% packet loss. Internet service and modem are the employee's expense.
