Senior Data Network Engineer

Vantage Point Solutions, a growing and dynamic consulting and engineering firm, is seeking a qualified individual to join our team of professionals. Vantage Point Solutions provides comprehensive engineering and consulting services tailored to the unique needs of broadband providers, public utilities, and financial institutions. We have an immediate opening for a Senior Data Network Engineer at our office in Birmingham, AL.

Overview:

VPS is searching for individuals with a passion for network engineering and prepared for a fast-paced environment with the opportunity to work on many different network architectures across a diverse set of platforms. The Network Services team is comprised of a group of network specialists and network engineers with varying degrees of technical expertise. VPS is looking to grow the team and add experienced individuals to complement our existing staff.

As a Senior Data Network Engineer, you will work with broadband service providers who provide broadband Internet, voice, video, and backhaul services to their customers. The role is highly technical and hands-on with complex network designs across many different platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Simultaneously manage multiple client projects with tasks including maintaining project planners, delegating tasks to other staff, coordinating with third parties, and leading meetings
  • Implement, upgrade, maintain, troubleshoot, and support Internet Service Provider (ISP) network topologies and equipment including routers, switches, MPLS Routed Optical Networks (RON), and FTTx access equipment across various vendors
  • Evaluate network equipment and software solutions for clients including Request for Proposal (RFP) projects to meet customer requirements
  • Collaborate with team members across the network engineering, managed services, and cybersecurity groups
  • Act as a technical mentor to junior staff for the Network Services team
  • Provide technical review of Method of Procedures (MOP) and network designs prior to implementation
  • Coordinate vendor relations including training, product roadmaps, and design standards
  • Escalate network issues to vendor Technical Assistance Centers (TAC) and collaborate on resolutions
  • Continuously monitor industry trends and new technologies, and leverage this to evolve best practices and procedures
  • Act as a point of escalation for our ticketing system and provide detailed notes and responses to team members and clients
  • Provide trust and confidence to our clients by consistently delivering a high-quality experience throughout projects
  • Develop Method of Procedures (MOP), configuration scripts, and supporting documentation for scheduled network maintenance
  • Perform periodic network maintenance including software upgrades, cutovers, intrusive changes, and diagnostics
  • Manage and document configuration changes and network architectures with tools including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Visio
  • Describe technical information to non-technical individuals

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve technical issues efficiently and quickly
  • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to adapt to changing environments
  • Willingness to work occasional after-hours as needed for implementation and troubleshooting support
  • Exceptional skill in communication, collaboration, task organization, time management, and time efficiency
  • Ability to occasionally travel with no limitations with driving or flying
  • Position is subject to a clean background check

Certifications & Experience

  • 7+ years of relevant network engineering experience, with a minimum of 2 years' experience in senior network engineering role maintaining and operating advanced service provider networks
  • CCNP/JNCIP or similar certification required
  • Extensive hands-on IP routing and MPLS experience with Cisco, Arista, Juniper, Ribbon, or Ciena equipment
  • Optical transport experience with Ribbon, Ciena, or Fujitsu is a plus
  • OLT experience with Calix or Adtran a plus
  • Comprehensive understanding of network protocols including MPLS, EVPN, BGP, OSPF, and ISIS
  • Comprehensive understanding of ISP services including DHCP, DNS, PPPOE, IPOE, BNG, RADIUS, and Carrier Grade NAT (CGN)
  • Proficient with IP multicast and Voice over IP (VoIP)

Comprehensive understanding of IPv6 with implementation and operational experience
