40% Perform, demonstrate, and instruct a variety of highly technical clinical procedures associate with care and treatment of critically ill animals utilizing life support techniques and intensive care procedures and equipment.
> Administer medications, Placement of intravenous catheters central, sampling, and peripheral, perform venipuncture, cyctocentesis, abdominal/thoracic taps, etc. Lead nursing rounds at shift change. Advise and accurately report patient status to case clinician, techs and students
20% ICU supervisor performs and manages the assignment and completion of these duties:
> Writing Employee Schedule
> Coverage of requested leave, On call duties, stocking and PRN ordering
> Orientation of students, technicians, and house officers //equipment inventory, maint., service
> Auditing SA ICU census and billing to maintain accuracy //controlled drug audits
> Staffing responsibility which includes hiring, discipline, termination, and evaluations
10% Advise and accurately report patient status to case clinician. Relay information to other technicians and students on case, alter orders as directed by clinician responsible for patient care.
Monitor the recovery of anesthetized patients; maintain accurate records of vital signs, treatments, procedures. Assist 7 VTH services (Internal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery [orthopedic and soft tissue],oncology, ophthalmology,neurology, emergency and Cardiology) in addition to occasional case work with zoo medicine and theriogenology with management of cases to include providing nursing care, monitoring, assessment, and technical procedures. Maintain the ICU in a state of readiness, esp. for CPR and or patients in crisis.
10% Other related duties as they pertain to the operation of ICU. Holiday and emergency response coverage as assigned and activated.
Manages and instructs in the daily operation and maintenance of sophisticated small animal diagnostic equipment to include but not limited to: oxygen cage, ECG, fluid pumps, and bedside blood analyzers.
>Responsible for equipment being sent out for repair//inventory and quality control.
To include completion of daily, weekly and monthly chores. Equipment quality controls. Inventory and stocking procedures. Other duties as assigned.
10% Instructs and manages ACS technicians, 3rd and 4th year veterinary students, veterinary interns, technician interns by tutorial, example, and as instructors in various veterinary course curriculum laboratories, the techniques and protocols appropriate for monitoring, nursing care, CPCR, and record keeping.
Maintain a daily census of all patients in ICU along with procedures and hospitalization fees.
Complete data entry for all charges daily.
10% Training,continual resource for questions, and following protocol and management of controlled drugs dispensed for use in the ICU.
Class II drug handling:
> responsible for checking dosage and requested amounts
>obtaining drug and maintaining required records
>ensuring proper administration and aid in discovering compatibility or avoiding with other drugs
>proper disposal of any unused drugs
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent with 4 years of applicable experience and 1 year of supervisory experience OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience and 1 year of supervisory experience OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience and 1 year of supervisory experience OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties, one year experience of supervisory experience
Preferred Qualifications:
CVT or equivalent
Special or Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS):
Able to answer phone calls after hours from students for issues regarding department. Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
