What’s involved?

 

As our Assistant Curator, you’ll lead and develop a team of Displays Supervisors, Senior Aquarists and Aquarists, ensuring core product excellence in the standards of display presentation and animal husbandry. Managing the running and maintenance of all off show areas including quarantining and husbandry of animals. You will play a key role in the continual development of the displays in line with the displays development plan. 

 

Your day-to-day will involve:

  • Overseeing team performance to ensure high-quality displays and animal welfare.
  • Collaborating with the Senior Curator to develop and implement effective diets and care strategies for livestock.
  • Ensuring regular maintenance of displays, tanks, and life support systems for optimal visitor satisfaction.
  • Managing inventory and ordering of feeds and supplies within budget.
  • Supporting team development and succession planning alongside the Senior Curator.

This is a full-time permanent role with 40 hours per week on a rota basis, including weekends and bank holidays. As a key member of the displays team, alarm callout duties will be mandatory and as such you will be a designated key holder. Whilst caring for animals, working with the public and for marketing/PR activities (including diving and events), it is likely that you will be required to work outside your normal contracted hours. In addition, you will be expected to remain flexible with regards to weekly rotas based on the needs of the business and animal requirements.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • You’ll have significant experience in the aquarium industry, with expertise in aquatic animal husbandry and life support systems.
  • Ideally, you’ll hold a degree or equivalent in a relevant field
  • A PADI Rescue Diver qualification or above 
  • Strong communication skills to inspire and manage the Displays team.
  • Previous leadership experience within the aquarium industry.
  • A keen understanding of zoo licensing and aquarium industry regulations is also required.
