Job description

The Epilepsy Foundation of America is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the foundation's financial operations, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. This position plays a vital role in supporting the foundation’s mission to improve the lives of those affected by epilepsy through financial stewardship, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial reporting to empower the foundation’s work in education, advocacy, research, and connection.

Position Summary
The Controller will oversee and manage the financial operations of the foundation, ensuring accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, cash forecasting, and maintaining financial integrity. This role includes leading the monthly closing process, financial statement preparation, treasury functions, and compliance with relevant accounting principles and regulations. The Controller collaborates with senior leadership to maintain the foundation’s financial health and provides financial analysis to support decision-making. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Monthly Closing & Financial Reporting

  • Oversee the monthly close process, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow) in accordance with GAAP.
  • Review and approve accounts payable transactions.
  • Analyze financial results, providing commentary on variances, trends, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Ensure timely reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies.
  • Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and reviews.

Cash Forecasting & Treasury Management

  • Lead the cash forecasting process, including daily, weekly, and monthly cash position reporting.
  • Maintain and update cash flow projections to ensure sufficient liquidity for operations.
  • Oversee treasury functions, including monitoring cash balances, short-term investments, and cash management systems.
  • Manage bank relationships and ensure banking needs are met.
  • Review and approve wire transfers, disbursements, and other cash-related transactions.
  • Support operations in the grant management process, processing grant drawdowns, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with internal financial policies, procedures, and government regulations.
  • Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure reporting integrity.
  • Stay updated on relevant accounting and tax regulations for ongoing compliance.
  • Coordinate with external advisors on tax filings and other regulatory matters.

Financial Systems & Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance financial operations.
  • Collaborate with other departments to streamline processes and improve financial data accuracy.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance for accurate and timely reporting.
  • Foster a collaborative environment within the finance department and across the foundation.
  • Assist senior leadership in interpreting financial data to inform strategic decisions.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
  • Experience: 3-5 years of accounting or finance experience, with 2-3 years in a supervisory role. Nonprofit or foundation accounting experience is a plus.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage, NetSuite, PN3) and advanced Excel skills; Microsoft Office Suite and ERP systems knowledge preferred.
  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting; familiarity with laws and regulations governing nonprofit financial operations.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to manage and mentor a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical abilities for interpreting financial data and presenting insights.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with effective interaction across all organization levels.

Special Requirements
  • Full-time position – Remote.
  • Occasional travel required for team meetings or training.
  • Some evening or weekend work may be necessary during peak reporting periods or for special projects.
