Primary Purpose

This position supports "Essex, an Emmes Company". Essex is a biomedical informatics and health information technology-focused consultancy founded in 2009 and headquartered in Rockville, MD. The Essex team comprises experts with extensive experience in strategically developing and managing complex health and biomedical information programs for clients in the Federal Government, research academia, and private sectors.

The Senior Computational Biologist leads the Computational Biology and Data Science team at Essex. S/he will be part of a fast-paced, cross-functional team of biologists, physicians, bioinformaticians, and software developers working at our client’s site on the leading-edge of precision oncology.

The Senior Computational Biologist:

  • will serve as a subject matter expert in the field of biological data curation and data modelling
  • will contribute to the design and development of databases and pipelines being built to store and analyze clinical data
  • will lead the design of websites that our end users use to interact with our data resources
  • will interface with participating clinical labs to ensure that data on patients are correctly loaded into the Precision Medicine Initiative data processing infrastructure
  • will develop timely and accurate clinical reports for our various stakeholders

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the field of biological data curation and data modelling
  • Contribute to the design and development of databases being built to store clinical data
  • Lead the design and implementation of NGS clinical data pipelines
  • Interface with participating clinical labs to ensure that data on patients are correctly loaded into the MATCH data processing infrastructure
  • Develop timely and accurate clinical analysis reports for our various stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Proficient in scripting languages (Python, R etc.) and snakemake
  • An understanding of clinical NGS data analysis features and pipeline development for analysis (WES, RNASeq, ATAQSeq, Single Cell, Long Read, etc)
  • Effective communication skills for presentations to federal stakeholders, engineers and other bioinformaticians.
  • Familiarity with code versioning software: SVN, Git

Required Experience:

  • An terminal degree in the Biology, Bioinformatics or Computer Science.
  • In addition to educational requirement, a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible job-related experience including two (2) years of experience in a leadership capacity.
  • A deep familiarity with Biology, Medical Genetics and the curation of medically relevant human disease variants.
  • A thorough understanding of the biological data curation process, including the importance of data provenance, levels of evidence; ontologies and controlled vocabularies used to annotate biological and clinical data.
