What you will be doing in the role of a Scientific Communications Manager

The Scientific Communications Manager serves on a team of scientific experts who research and present on key topics, partners, and opportunities to develop communication products that may include high level talking points and reports which support external partnership meetings. This role provides scientific/subject matter expertise to the translation of research, technical and other complex content into meaningful lay-friendly communication. The Scientific Communications Manager will work cross functionally across teams to build and support key educational programs and provide expertise on educational priorities around research. 

The Scientific Communications Manager will develop and maintain a 360-degree, high level overview of the field of breast cancer. In addition, the Scientific Communications Manager will stay abreast of current Komen programs and priorities, communications campaigns, and organizational strategy to clearly identify and communicate organizational needs and partnership opportunities. The manager is a member of the education team within Komen’s mission division. The education team supports Komen’s role as an authority in breast cancer by providing evidence-based information for those seeking breast health/cancer information and building key education strategies and engagement with the breast cancer community and the public. 

What you will bring to the table 

  • Create educational approaches on clinical trials and topics relevant to breast cancer patients in a rapidly evolving landscape. Tailor innovative education programs to be accessible and responsive to patient needs. Partner with other mission teams to develop mission education content as assigned.
  • Provides scientific/subject matter expertise to the translation of research, technical and other complex content into meaningful lay-friendly communication as a partner to the communications team.
  • Support content development for assigned educational opportunities highlighting Komen’s mission and educational priorities for a variety of virtual/digital media including video content, podcasts, webinars, etc. Create educational resources to support campaigns on key topics on breast health.
  • Identify opportunities to share and exchange learning about the field of breast cancer with staff, leadership, and the public at large.
  • Researches and identifies potential priorities to inform educational strategy.
  • Support Komen leadership through research and development of key talking points, reports, and preparation for meetings with external organizations.
  • Develop high level reports on trends and advances in the field of breast cancer to support development of communications projects, external partnerships, and fundraising priorities.
  • Collaborate cross functionally to report to leadership on trends, industry shifts, evolving needs and challenges, and practice changing advances to better understand the current and future state of breast cancer as it pertains to Komen Communication and partnership needs.
  • Assess communications from external sources such as media reports/outlets, professional groups/associations, other non-profits, etc. about breast cancer and other issues important to the Komen mission to actively identify and address emerging needs and advances in the breast cancer space. 
  • Collect evidence in the form of published literature, press releases, and other bodies of knowledge to develop and drive development and partnership strategies as requested. 
  • Support education and communication needs for Mission key events, including ASCO, SABCS, Advocacy Summit, Disparities Summit, etc.
  • Support Komen internal and external webinars that highlight advancements in breast cancer to update our community.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

We know you have and will be able to

  • Doctoral Degree in biomedical sciences and a minimum of 2-5 years related work experience.
  • Ability to understand and research current trends and advances in the breast cancer field.
  • Ability to convey technically dense information in an impactful and clear manner to all audiences. 
  • Knowledge of the field of breast cancer including advances in research, policy, patient advocacy, and community outreach. 
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
  • Understanding of communication industry practices (social media, etc.) and how to leverage content in different settings
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Highly motivated, passionate, and creative team player with demonstrated commitment to the organization.

We would love if you also have

  • Doctoral degree with publication history in the field of breast cancer. 
  • Prior experience in scientific/medical communications. 
  • This position requires willingness and ability to travel occasionally, up to 25% locally and / or out of town.

Approximate salary range of $64,000 - $90,000; exact compensation ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job level, internal equity, and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate's skills, experience, and geographic location.
