Business Development Manager, North American New Client Marketplace with focus in Structural Heart, Interventional Radiology, Ultrasound, and Life Sciences
HISTORY
Surgical Science is a leading supplier of medical training simulators. Our training systems are used by medical training centers and institutions worldwide for the practice, validation, and certification of students, surgeons, and medical doctors.
For over 20 years, Surgical Science has been committed to providing state-of-the-art medical training simulators based on the idea that surgical training can be made safer. Back at the time when the company was started in 1999 from initiatives at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden, virtual reality was barely known – even the internet was new for most of us – and there were only a few projects if any in the medical simulation business. Over the years, the focus has shifted from fundamental R&D to commercialization of the technology, as both hardware and software are nowadays shipped out from our sites all over the world, and with a growing licensing service of the world’s most advanced real-time simulation of instrument/tissue interaction directly to MedTech suppliers, a whole new phase of sales growth is envisioned.
Being pioneers in the field, the Surgical Science team is proud of what’s been accomplished as it continues to innovate, with the vision that in the future every patient undergoing a medical procedure is certain that the caregiver is trained and certified in a simulated environment.
BACKGROUND
Surgical Science is a simulation product company – with core competence around its proprietary software and hardware for the simulation of instrument/tissue interactions. Based on its own technology, turnkey simulators are developed, manufactured, and sold to teaching hospitals, clinics, and medical training centers. The products offer training in a virtual setting in general surgery, endovascular, gastroenterology, pulmonology, OB/Gyn, urology, orthopedics, robotics, and imaging. More than 7,000 systems have been delivered worldwide supported by more than 400 validation studies.
Surgical Science has successfully over the years acquired simulation companies, Simbionix, Mimic, and SenseGraphics, to form a world-leading simulation company. The company is listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market in Stockholm, Sweden.
BUSINESS & OPERATION
There is a growing trend in medical education to train away from patients, to avoid challenging patient safety. Surgical Science is a leading supplier of virtual reality simulators for evidence-based keyhole surgery training as well as endoscopy training, allowing novice surgeons and medical doctors to improve their psychomotor skills and instrument handling before entering the operating room.
Surgical Science’s mission is to develop and deliver cutting-edge and validated medical simulation training products with unequaled graphics, usability, and skills transference “from VR to the OR” in an effort to improve performance through practice.
Headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, the company has R&D sites in Gothenburg, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, and Seattle. We service our customers from our regional sales offices in Sweden, Israel, the USA, Dubai, and China, and with a Global Distributor Network, there is a presence in most markets worldwide. Some 90% of the sales are outside of Sweden, where the USA was the most important market in 2021.
BUSINESS AREAS
The business is divided into two major units: Educational Products and Industry/OEM. Within Industry/OEM, collaboration projects are run with industrial partners in MedTech, for example, to produce brand-specific robot surgery training.
Educational Products
Plug-and-play simulators including hardware with haptic (tactile) feedback, and software. All simulators come with a basic package of fundamental technical skills training, and procedures are optional. Associations for various sub-specialties are among the targets for sales, as the goal is to have simulators implemented in training curriculums on local, regional, and national levels. When sold, efforts are made to help customers get going with training courses.
Industry/OEM
Collaborations with industrial partners or organizations. Typically, projects are sold on a consultancy basis, with a royalty model for the final product. The company strives to control IP to leverage on other projects as well as for cross-synergies with Educational Products.
VISION
Every patient undergoing a medical procedure is certain that the caregiver is trained and certified in a simulated environment.
COMPANY CULTURE
Working at Surgical Science gives you opportunities for exchange, cooperation, and social contacts. We make sure to make room for all employees to influence and contribute with their own experience and knowledge. We value growth and development among our employees. You will get the chance to be a part of a welcoming and open team and contribute with your creativity.
MARKET & COMPETITORS
The market for healthcare and medical simulation shows excellent growth and is expected to grow 15 to 20 percent annually. The USA is the largest market, followed by Europe and Asia. Important regions that will drive growth during the coming years are countries with increasing expenditure capabilities, and increased focus on patient safety, such as China and India. There are a few suppliers of medical simulation on the market, and within Surgical Science’s business, there are mainly two competitors. Within Industry/OEM, Surgical Science competes with other companies that license their software to industrial partners.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Surgical Science’s software is proprietary, with small exemptions. They have been refined during 20 years of constant development. For each new project, medical advisors are engaged to confirm the medical accuracy and relevance of the content.
Hardware components are produced at various subcontractors, with final assembly being done at the sites in Gothenburg, Seattle, and Tel Aviv.
